Guys, I will not have Rose or River paired up with Classic Doctors. Dear Rassilon, is nothing sacred. I know exactly what you mean. It drives me demented. Especially when they give her Five, which is very, very wrong. Oh. (Look, it was Six! Rose got rather more than she expected... Heh.)

Library Lover, I will have to have a think. I am ridiculously bad at thinking up fics I want that I don't immediately feel compelled to go and write myself. But I am a complete sucker for anything involving Ben and Polly, if that's any use.
And Abby... while I love a challenge and writing fic for people, I really do think that was my oneshot Six/Rose story, I'm afraid. I wasn't sure I could manage even that, but thought it would be amusing to have Six rather too ready to take her up on her offer!

I think that must have been the first thing of yours I've ever read, and I just absolutely loved it! Your style and creative spin really hit a key with me, lostspook! Thus, what I meant by my post here and on Teaspoon, is that I hope you continue to use your brilliant ability as a writer to work outside the box. Twist the stories as you do, mix up the Doctors and the companions. It's people like you that give people like me even more adoration to the DW fandom and inspire us to write more and more. Therefore, in the end, I just hope you'll continue writing such unique and daring fics as this one.

In fact, I shall definitely have to go and have a lie down from the lovely compliments here (I don't take them well; I go all red and embarrassed ) Oh, now, look what you've done - you've gone and swollen my head; I'll be stuck in my bedroom now until I shrink it back down again. Heh, seriously, it's nice to know when somebody likes things & I admit, I do have a bizarre sense of humour. It seems to work round here, though! ;D

Now, Six/Romana, on the other handNope, nothing is sacred these days. ;D I thought it was great, lostspook - managed to critique the Rose/Doctor thing without going into unseemly bashing as I probably would have (and probably have, in at least a couple of instances I can think of!). Six/Romana...hmmm...I probably owe him that for the Ten Doctors fic I wrote, don't I?

But I am a complete sucker for anything involving Ben and Polly, if that's any use. Sadly I have not really seen anything with Ben and Polly, other than a lone scene here or there. I am afraid I wouldn't be very successful at writing them. I am experimenting with something which may interest you. I can say no more right now.

I could take a swing at Ben and Polly, if you'd like lostspook. I have seen most of their episodes in entirely. I'll say that I've never written for them, but I'm always willing to try. Anything in particular you want genre? Introspective? Adventure? Fluff or General? Do you like drabbles?

In answer: Nothing over teen rated (or my brains explode messily), I do like drabbles, very much, and just like the general awww-ness of Ben/Polly - I think a bit of fluff is unavoidable. I just generally think there should be more Ben/Polly fic out there, so if you're feeling tempted, I'm happy to push you on here. ;D Probably business as usual - getting into unlikely trouble and worrying and rescuing each other. It'd be quite fun to see them with One. But the addition of Two and Jamie is never something to grumble at, if that's easier.

Nope, nothing is sacred these days. ;D And when JJ says that, you KNOW it's true. I very much like Ben and Polly, but I'm intimidated by Ben's cockney - if I could get the hang of his colloquialisms and such it would be fun to fluffify them. Btw, you might very much enjoy Derek Metaltron's "Doctor Who Classicfied" series on Teaspoon if you haven't already seen it - he's going through some NuWho eps and rewriting them with the classic Doctors and companions. www.whofic.com/series.php?seriesid=2078

That's the most ridiculous line I have ever heard. Fanfic is all about the crossing over and meeting of different people, concepts, and ideas. If anything, lostspook is right on key with how more fanfics should be written. I thought it was great, lostspook - managed to critique the Rose/Doctor thing without going into unseemly bashing as I probably would have (and probably have, in at least a couple of instances I can think of!). I agree. It's nice seeing some fun Rose/Doctor stuff that critques the supposed ship without bashing. There is somethign to respect in their relationship as with any companion/Doctor relationship. Six/Romana...hmmm...I probably owe him that for the Ten Doctors fic I wrote, don't I? *cringes and shivers in disgust at the thought of Doctor/Romana shipping* That's just sooo wrong, particularly with Six. I've seen those fics and they are strangely on a ship of their own to phrase it politely.

I can't say I'll get the accents, but I usually never write for accents. I go for the voice in the words and personality found in the actions of the character. I find it works just as well without having to worry about colloquialisms.

So, anybody on here who's ever written Jamie; do you do the comedy phonetic-Scots accent thing? I have a tendency to do so, maybe as some attempted short cut to characterisation, and I can't decide whether I think it's a good idea or not. Thoughts?
I mean, I don't feel the need to do it with English characters, even ones with accents and/or dialects very different from my own natural speech. I've been taking a bit of a swing at Ben and Polly too in that ancient Greek fic I'm putting out at the moment; I don't think I've given Ben any obvious Cockney-isms so far, for fear of overdoing it a bit, but then I have Jamie going "Och aye" every other sentence, so I don't know if maybe I should. For consistency! ;D
Which sort of brings me to think about the idea of character catchphrases; when Ben's with Polly, I find myself fighting the temptation to have him calling her "Duchess" every time he speaks to her, just like when I write Ace I try my hardest not to have her going "Gordon Bennett, Professor!" every page or so...
I don't really know what my point is here...I guess I'm just asking; Jamie - the dinnae this and och aye thats and people getting their heeds doon - do you do it or not, and what do you think when you read fic that does? ;D

Of course nothing's sacred, that's the point of fic yeah? Except for K-9 *nods* We will all bow and worship at the altar of K-9 since he secretly rules the world and has for a long time. (K-9 totally ships it)

JJ, as far as it goes with Jamie, I like what you're doing thus far. Granted, I haven't read the last two chapters... but you seem to be striking the right balance with the phonetics.
It's still readable, and it sounds like the character, and that's the main thing. I've read fic where the author tries to do Jamie COMPLETELY phonetically and it drives me up the wall (ditto with fics that do the same for Nine, Rose, or even Jackie. I mean really, does Jackie really need phonetics? Yet Ten never gets them... it's just bizarre.)

Thinking on it, I guess I tend to sprinkle in a bit of "Jamieisms" when it seems called for, usually when he's surprised or upset so it comes out stronger than usual, but he's never seemed difficult to me. I'll happily toy with a bit of Ben and Polly if I can get away without the phonetics being a point of contention with readers, though looking at the vast heap of unfinished bunnies I have who knows when their turn will bubble through.

My feeling (and I'm not sure if this is borne out by the facts) is that I've been doing it less in my more recent fics. What I'm aiming for is the written equivalent of Frazer Hines's generic 'TV Scots': something that indicates his nationality without making it difficult to understand him. When reading fic: There are some (though certainly not yours) where the phonetic accent is overdone. For example, there's one that has him consistently use 'nau' for 'now'. I find that a bit intrusive, not least because the two don't sound any different to me. And, yes, Jamie's pretty much the only character I do it for. I don't try to write Lucie Miller or Samantha Briggs phonetically, or make Daleks put DASH-ES BE-TWEEN THEIR SYL-LA-BLES.

I've actually attempted Jamie-speak. It's on Teaspoon. I'm utterly incompetent and have no right even to attempt it, but I did it anyway. I think I got by, no one criticized it or complained, but no one on Teaspoon criticizes, and I don't know how many people saw it, there or in the (apparently) unpopular fanzine it appeared in.
I slipped in and out of the phonetic spellings, using them only when I half-guessed I was on firm ground, often just not trying at all for several lines.

By and large, I don't worry too much about accents, although Jamie is an awkward one, because it's whether or not you make him as Scots as he ought to be or leave him as he is? By and large, I tend to make him vaguely as he is, and, erm, make him say aye occasionally and eat sandwiches at all opportunities. Sometimes when I've been reading John's fics (and Dave's on adwc), I get daring enough to add in a didnae here and there.
Generally, I think not making Ben too cockney is a good idea - there are few things worse than a bad cockney accent! I like writing him, and Polly, too. And he has to call her Duchess from time to time, cos he does!
The only accent I ever attempted was Mrs Tyler's. I don't think I did too badly, but she is supposed to be West Country (I think Wiltshire), so I ought to be able to do that...
As for the shipping controversy I seem to have inadvertenly landed in there, um, well, sorry. (I'm not very controversial outside of my fics.)
(And I have a feeling Six/Romana is worrying because it would have to be at least half serious - and then that treads all over any ships involving Five and Six's companions and could easily be the Doctor Secretly Pines For Her, which is something that makes me reach for a torpedo or at least contenplate icebergs. However, if anyone could make me eat my words and beg for more Six/Romana fic, I daresay it would be JJ!! I quite like Eight/Romana - because she's president, he's wary of her and that gives it a different spin, which works and naturally, post Time War, it'd be nice to see her & as President, Nine and Ten must be thinking of her from time to time. But Five, Six and Seven? I'm unsure.
Hah, someone said I should do Seven/Rose next. I dread to think what awful thing he'd do to her. He certainly wouldn't try scaring her off by kissing her and then lecturing... There might be Daleks.)
