I've been putting 2 and 2 together, and I've possibly arrived at 6, but it's only a theory! I think I may be on to something though.
** I, like many of you, have been saying "Ood Sigma, WTF?" I know that many people think that "he is returning through the darkness, and will knock 4 times" refers to the Master. That has never really sat well with me, because it is too obvious, especially once it leaked that John Simm would be back. (Plus RTD and DT have been admitting for months in interviews that Simm is in it, but I haven't heard them admit to anyone else spoilery.) Here comes my theory. Remember who the villain was when we first met the Ood? What if the creature from the Satan Pit has found a way back into our universe from wherever the black hole sent him? It said "This is the darkness, my domain" so 'returning through the darkness', not to mention a black hole, makes sense. Bear with me:
- Even though Ood Sigma wasn't on that planet, since they have a telepathically linked, hive mind he might be able to sense the creature since it had once controlled some Ood, and is trying to warn the Doctor.
- What if the unknown creature from "Midnight" was a manifestation of the Satan Pit creature, who had made it back to this universe but was still too weak to do more than invade a person and control their speech? It knocked 4 times. Plus midnight . . . darkness again.
- What if Simm!Master isn't really the Master? That could explain why he looks the same even though his body was destroyed. It could also explain that flash in the clip of his head turning into a skull. (It could also explain that hair color, but I digress. ;D)
- The Satan Pit creature said that he came from "before time . . . before the cataclysm, before this universe was created" . . . possibly why it's called "The End of Time"?
- In "The Satan Pit" when Ten is talking to the creature he says "I've seen bad gods, and false gods, and demigods, and would-be gods, but out of that whole pantheon, I believe in her." In the SJA episode "The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith" the Trickster appears again, and there are several references to the Pantheon of Discord. The Doctor even comments that the Trickster is looking pretty lonely for a pantheon. Perhaps foreshadowing that more help is on the way?
- In the SJA episode "Mona Lisa's Revenge", why revenge? She wasn't really out for revenge against anyone, no one had harmed her, she just didn't want to be stuck in the painting anymore. And her "brother", the one in the painting that was too terrible to ever be seen without driving men mad? Back to Midnight again, "We must not look at goblin men . . . " That claw coming out of the box looked suspiciously like the hands of the Satan Pit creature, or some kind of scary demon. I think the title and that hand were foreshadowing Ten's finale. The devil is back to get revenge on Ten for ruining his escape and dumping him into the black hole.
- The events in "The Satan Pit" caused the Doctor to question the things that he has always believed - in particular rational science over superstitious religion. In WoM he violated his ultimate belief, that no one has the right to change something that was meant to be. Perhaps defeating the devil, or at least locking him away again, is his penance and ultimately causes him to be injured so severely that he regenerates. **
Like I said, it's just a theory! If you think I'm crazy you can tell me . . . I can take it.
