Hi everyone.
I'm Rutan, and I found this site from reading the bio of ClocketPatch on Teaspoon, after enjoying one of her stories. So far I've only read a few of the threads in the companion folder (and voted for my favourites - Ian, Barbara, Zoe, Liz, Nyssa, Mel and Donna).
Starting to read the folders from the top down I came to this one and supposed I'd better make my first post. I was born in 1960. My first Who memory is of watching the Web Planet on a fuzzy old b&w TV in a small council house in the north of England. As a boy I went through the dalek mania-of the 60s and was glued to Who throughout the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Doctors. I never really cottoned on to the 5th. To a teenage boy, Peter Davison seemed too 'normal' and too ineffectual after the over=the-top Godmode of the later Tom Baker seasons, and I only watched the occasional story.
I made a point of tuning in for the regeneration, and Colin's first episode was too much. I abandoned Who for Blake's 7, comic books and role-playing games.
I was about 30 when, after collecting all the Blake's 7 stories on video, I saw a copy of Ark in Space in the same store and decided to pick it up to see if the Tom Baker stories were as good as my childhood memories. I was blown away. I snapped up all the VHS tapes I could find and started collecting back issues of Doctor Who Monthly and DWB to read about the states of fandom.
After losing my job in the 90s I began writing fanfic, most of which I have managed to recover from the internet and post on Teaspoon after assuming it was all lost forever as computers replaced others with drive failure and I never bothered to back anything up. I sold off most of my tape collection in 2000, but now have all the DVDs that exist, and have loved watching some of the b&w stories for the first time (that I can remember anyway - I must have seen most of them as a young child).
I never expected the New Series to be as successful as it has been, but it's brilliant to see such a resurgence of the iconic British SF series and such an influx of new fans. Long may it continue.

Greetings, Rutan! A good name for a fan who left after four, but I reckon you knew that. I'm Merry and I can (and do and will again) go on for hours regarding the state of fandom and the like. My first Doctor was the fourth, and as such I do hold him in high esteem, however, I also adore five (i know I can see why others don't I just think him a welcome change from those self-same four antics you described).
I'm also fond of seven, and ten, however since joining I've become a subversive six supporter, as he IS the Doctor and just gets no love what-so-ever from fandom, so by default, I chose to like him as well. I am quite fond of the new series, though I don't see it so much as continuation, which is something I REALLY wish they would develop. I imagine you'll have loads of fun here, and find a fair few members with whom you've things in common.
Out of curiosity, is your name on teaspoon the same? I love the voice and tone in your letter and would be quite interested in reading what you have written. OOooh, by the way, I too am a clocket on teaspoon recruit, or rather was, way back in my new day.

Hello Rutan. Welcome! I suspect you will be in good company here. Quite a range of ages and favourite-Doctors are represented. Also, we're lucky to have with us a few of the best authors on the Teaspoon. *nods in the direction of JJPOR, Primsong, Magnus, and Merry* I'm guessing you've already read my Teaspoon bio, so I won't exhaust you with that again. Suffice to say I came to the Old from the New and fell very deeply in love with fandom. For fandom has been very kind to me (mostly). And, I agree; long may it continue! --- you're a subversive six supporter Merry? : ;D it amuses me how that always happens after awhile. I like him in the audios, and his coat is brilliant, and he DID try to kill Peri (all of which gives him win point in my books. Sorry Peri)

Hi to both of you, and thanks for the greeting.
Yep, I write as Rutan on Teaspoon. Clocket, you gave me a kind review for the Mel/Pex story, which caused me to check out your stories (I was particularly hoping for some Mel fic, but haven't seen any so far) and then your bio led me here.
How long has the forum been in operation? It's nice occasionally to find a place a bit less frenetic than Outpost Gallifrey, which can be hard to keep up with (as well as having a good many posters with somewhat... extreme... takes on many subjects.

Nope, no Mel fic yet. I want to, but then, there's a very long list of things I want to do: finish my WIPs, write a REG!Nine story (because I love him so), write a Narnia/DW crossover, etc. etc. Currently my main goal is to finish Forever Tomorrow, but I've got a Seven plotbunny which is neatly shifting my attention away from that.
Also, I'm an abysmally slow writer at times, which doesn't help at all.
To answer your other question: This forum's been around for around, about three years. I echo your sentiment on Outpost Gallifrey, which scares me, really. Luckily I discovered this place, and I've found it to be a very nice mix of opinions and acceptance. I can dance off the extreme end with the best of them, but I usually stumble meekly back from the brink a few hours later.

Hello, Rutan and welcome to the boards; they're a friendly bunch here and I'm sure they'll make you feel at home. As you say, being a bit smaller than some of the other forums, and a bit more laid back, is one of this place's strengths. We have friendly differences of opinion from time to time, and sometimes have to agree to disagree, but have up to now avoided the sort of unnecessariness you see going on in some other places.
It is amazing how many people seem to come here via Clocket's Teaspoon account; she seems to be the forum's primary recruiter, anyway. I am yet another of her recruits, as are a lot of us.
To introduce myself, I'm also from the north of England, from Liverpool in my case. I'm just about to turn 31, which is a constant source of astonishment to me, as I remember being only 20, like, yesterday. ;D I started watching Who as a child in the 80s; Davison, Baker, C, McCoy; I don't think I became what you'd call a fan until McCoy, though. I was hooked, and I suppose for me he'll always be *the* Doctor, mainly because of the timing of it, and also because, well, he *was* the Doctor through the early-mid 90s when I was starting to get into the fandom and everything, until McGann came along anyway; the New Adventures novels shaped my view of the show, as I guess they must have done for a lot of people at that time. I sort of discovered the 70s and 60s stuff around that time as well, and was blown away by it.
While I occasionally have my disagreements with the new series, I don't begrudge it its success; it has had its moments over the past few years, and moreover seems to have attracted so many people to the original series, which can't be a bad thing.
Anyway, enough about me - welcome again and I'm sure you'll enjoy it here.

Welcome, Rutan! How is your long war against the Sontarans going, anyway?
Interesting to hear of your experience becoming a fan. I love hearing about the various ways people get into the show - I don't know of too many other shows that have quite so many different jumping points and people from such a wealth of backgrounds.
I tried joining the OG as well, and didn't much care for it either. I'm somewhat in awe of how this place manages to be a board for Doctor Who fans and yet have so many intelligent, reasonable members. Kidding, mostly, but you have to agree that this this fandom can be a fearsome place.

Hello Rutan!
I found your story in getting into Who very interesting. I'm on the other end the spectrum, I guess. I'm a very new recruit of the Doctor Who world. I came in a couple months ago by watching the New Doctor Who with Nine and then Ten. I decided to jump back in time and start at the beginning after loving so much of the new stuff. I'm still in the middle of watching the First Doctor's stories and loving every minute of it. Can't wait to get to the stories that you seem to hold so dear.
I think you'll enjoy it here. I have so far and I find that the variety of people here and their reasons for loving Doctor Who but are still friendly to people who love it for different reasons is quite brilliant.

Foreman!!! Your icon=epicwin!!!! Clocket, it was the contrary bits of my nature all banded together in defense of their childhood hero, the Doctor, heck even three is growing on me (which disturbs me so, but having recently reviewed planet of the spiders alongside whichever is his first dalek episode, well, he's really rather got a boyish charm I find soooo compelling) Rutan, I look forward to reading some of your fan fics, as well as to posting about the site with you!
Oh, and a brief warning regarding Jjpor, he's ruthless, don't let his quaint liverpudlian act fool you!!! (i jest tho....)

I really don't think I am as a big of fan as everyone else. I am here for the social reasons more than DW reasons. I have made friends here and well I have no where else to go. I am a pretty lonely person (sad, isn't it). Because of that I am very protective of this forum. I am not afraid to fight and others will say so.
Look around, comment, chat on the c-box, and join us on DW Live nights. Be good and I will warm up to you.

Welcome Rutan! I'll have to go take a gander at your stories as well. The more the merrier - and speaking of Merry - was that an admission of Three having charm? Bwhahaa! We will make you a convert yet! ;-)
Another recruit of Clocket's here - are any of us not? I begin to wonder! - and a One-Two-Three fan for the most part, with occasional bouts of Five and Seven, but they all have moments to redeem them, even poor old Six. Great to have you join us, and also nice to have another, ahem...mature member here. I'm nearly the same vintage as the show, but you beat me - Magnus, look! Another member for our Ubergeezers club! :-D
Web Planet? Oh good heavens...of all of them to have an early memory of.... lol!

Web Planet? Oh good heavens...of all of them to have an early memory of.... lol! Hey now. I just watched that a couple days ago and thought it was rather fantastic! But fantastic due to a lot of the nonsense. And I found this as well, which just amuses me to no end. A nice little "The Web Planet" video set to fantastic music. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrrzSGEXsjI

Hello Rutan... The Sontaran-Rutan war is one of my favorite DW things. In the US I didn't come across DW until the end of the 70s with the first four Tom seasons, which are still my favorites. It's Four then Three for me. I'm on Teaspoon too.
