I completely agree. As long as the Doctor is happy, who ever you believe that might be...including himself or the TARDIS , that's all the matters. A happy, saving the Universe Doctor makes a happy audience. ;D I think the Doctor was so upset about Rose because after all that post-war angst, losing a companion just made him more angst-y. But I blame Rusty for the post-war angst. I agree, if it has to be one of his companions, I'd say Romana (II more so than I). And shippers can take the Pr1me computer ads as canon. xD Romana I was rather annoyed, but Romana II seemed closer. I haven't even seen all of the serials with Romana II, but I felt they 'clicked'. But, yes. This is all fanon. Not canon. And let's not get in a pairing battle, 'cos really, all Doctor/someone pairings are fanon.

True. Very true. Most scifiction shows that show romance on the screen mess it up, making it into a soapy soap. *grumbles Stargate under breath* So let the shippers stay on the Internet or whatever dark places they may lurk, and let us the fans of Doctor Who enjoy the show for what it is suppose to be...a grown man in a big blue box saving the Universe. ;D The Doctor can't save the universe if he's always distracted and thinking with this underpants. I don't mind romance..as long as its not on screen and I don't have to watch it. Its for your imagination to fill in the gaps...not TV.

Maybe I should clarify, I don't think Romana was DEFINITELY his true love, only maybe, only that it's the only pairing that makes any sense. To me.
Or maybe the Rani *grins*
What can I say? I'm against cross-species romance. Aren't I horrid?
Jack would hate me.

Whee, differing opinion discussions/debates!
The Doctor is half human. Discuss. (I'm kidding. Really, don't. But if you want to, make a separate thread)

Personally, it's hard for me to wrap my head around the Doctor being romantically involved, so I tend not to, but when I do interpret a relationship that way it often seems more friendship based. That said, I think that the Doctor and Rose shared a nice chemistry, and their special bond / friendship could be considered romantic. *shuts up before she's hit* The Doctor and Romana have a similar bond, but the advantage of being the same species, in my opinion. They're just...more aloof? I don't know.

Yes, I personally (and many others actually) think RTD made a big mistake in bringing romance to Doctor Who. Sure, some people enjoy it, but really, the Doctor doesn't have to snog each companion (I blame Eight!). That's what fandom is for, not the actual series. Yes, there are some companions that the Doctor seems to bond with more than others (and that's only being realistic, really), but he's always been able to let go and move on (or at least pretend to).

I don't know if it was so much a mistake as overused. Personally, I tend to ship the Doctor and Rose, the Doctor and Romana, and other ships I deem appropriate in my fanfics [though that does raise the question if that's where they belong ^^] I wish, however, that RTD would stop making the Doctor fall for everyone he meets nowadays.

And everyone that meets him fall for him.
I don't have anything against Doctor/Rose shippers, it's just the massive amount that believe that they're 'True Loves' and were meant to be together forever and ever until the End of Time that bother me. What with the way of fandom, I've learned to accept just about any ship. Sure, there are a few ships that I like more than others, but I won't start an argument with someone just 'cos they disagree with me.
Technically speaking (as the Doctor never really talks about how he feels on screen) all pairings are really not canon. Sure, once you find a ship you support, you'll begin to see little moments on screen that support that ship, but if you had no exposure to fandom and watched Doctor Who start to finish (however long that would take...), you would notice a massive increase in the romance theme in the New Series. Well, not just an increase, but from nothing to something. It all really began with Eight (and Rusty is a pronounced fan of the TVM) I blame America.
But, I'm rambling.

I know what you mean. Throughout Classic Who the Doctor was pretty much asexual. I think most "extreme shippers" haven't been exposed to Doctor Who's roots, and perhaps imagine that the Doctor has always been romatically involved?

I've been exposed to the Classic. Five was my first Doctor... I had a huge crush on PD.
But still when I first met Rose and the Doctor I could see chemistry between them. I didn't mind if they ended together; it didn't bother me one bit. It was when you got into Series 2 and 3 of the new season things started getting emo and shippy... and slightly annoying.
On another note, 8 wasnt the first Doctor to be romantic. Both 3 and 5 showed romantic or got into emotional entanglements in their runs (of course this is what I've learned through research and talking to others so it is quite possible I've been convinced of a fallacy).

Finally, our Rose opinions meet. I really didn't mind the Rose/Doctor dynamic with Nine. Mostly because it wasn't really romantic. It was chemistry, but the relationship wasn't... I don't know how to describe it. It seemed right. Even Ten/Rose was okay for awhile... but then it got all emo and love sick and rather unhealthy. And I completely agree with you on Three. Much as I love him, he's just plain creepy with his companions sometimes. Three is probably the most outrageous flirt of all the Doctors. Some of the things he says... And, on top of that, the villian in one of his stories was a bunch of giant maggots which are quite obviously made out of condoms (and I checked the BBC website to confirm it. THEY ARE!!!). And then there's the Master with his TCE. And various other things... Three era is just plain filthy really. Though Four had a the Creature from the Pit so... Five I can't really see. There was actually a no touching clause on the show at that time so you never see him hugging his companions or even holding hands! And he's so... stuffy? And kind of a jerk actually. Adorable though. I'm the first to admit that PD is made of sexy. And he's not bad looking even now. Oooo, and speaking of non-asexual Doctors. Have any of you watched webcast!Nine yet? There is very disturbing TARDIS answering machine machine in that that's just... O.o So... yeah... but I still firmly believe that the Doctor's only true soul mate is Romana and (even though you might see me pairing him with other people in fic) I will continue to believe that until the bitter end. I'm set in my ways. Honest.

I really liked the dynamic between Rose and Nine too. And I didn't mind the Ten/Rose stuff back when I was watching Season 2 for the first time; it wasn't until afterwards having to listen to months of hysterical Rose and Tennant fangirls that made me dislike her.
And yeah, there was definitely romance in the classic series, it just wasn't quite so obvious. In the classic series, you have to pick up on a lot of subtle clues and stuff to find romances (except for maybe Four/Romana II, but that was probably due to a real romance bleeding through into their work), whereas in the new series and especially Seasons Two and Three it feels sort of like it's thrust upon us and brought up again and again and again to make sure that everyone realizes it's there.

If you never knew anything about Doctor Who, and saw the Classic series, you wouldn't notice anything especially romantic. But with the New Series, the Doctor's snogging everyone left, right, and centre. I don't mind the subtle things in the Classic Series, because it sort of takes a fan to see them, but the New Series is just too obvious and gives the wrong impression of the Doctor.

No one commented on my gratuitous Creature from the Pit pic... I'll just take that as a hint that you're all ignoring the pic and pretending that never happened.
What is with Nuwho and the snogging? Once in a very blue moon for dramatic effect I'll accept. Every other episode, seemingly for pure shock value, I'll not. The Doctor's fast becoming something of an inter-galactic playboy.
Hopefully Donna will slap him out of this trend, or Rose, when she returns, will have something to say about it. I'm almost looking forward to Rose now... kind of... I'd be so amused if she comes back only to say she's got on with her life and to ask the Doctor why he keeps moping around instead of living a fantastic life.
That would make me giggle-fit grin.

You might just get your wish of a different Rose. I've seen pictures of Rose with a gun... and I don't mean the small hand gun... I'm talking big bertha side one... kind of like the one the Doctor used in the Dalek to kill the Dalek. Makes me wonder what kind of person Rose has become to handle such a weapon. Also I too hope she's moved on had the fantastic life the Doctor asked her to have back in series 1 of the New Series. BTW, the Doctor is so not snogging people in every other episode. There has only been four kisses for him in the last two series: Martha (that was to buy him time and meant nothing), Rose (which he didn't start), Reinette (which technically he didn't start again), and Astrid (okay I'll give you that one). That's still 36 out of 39 episodes where the Doctor didn't kiss anyone for saving or otherwise. No one commented on my gratuitous Creature from the Pit pic... I'll just take that as a hint that you're all ignoring the pic and pretending that never happened. What is with Nuwho and the snogging? Once in a very blue moon for dramatic effect I'll accept. To make you happy, I"ll comment on the picture. Honestly I couldn't tell what it was... some shapeless green thing. But are you serious.
