This sounds like a Chuck Norris-ism, almost. It's brilliant.

*keels over* I've just sprayed the keyboard with tea. Bugger. But the keyboard is still working. Such is the awesomeness of the Tom Baker (which is mostly the voice and the wool... but damn if his voice isn't strangely hypnotic) www.tombakersays.com

Wait, I take that back. The wool and the voice are part of awesomeness... but the true source of the awesomeness is so brillant that it cannot be seen by mere mortals such as ourselves.

Actually, earlier today I was being bored and ignoring my homework and REALLY wanting to watch some Tom when I happened to stumbled across the Sonataran Experiment on my laptop... now, I'll watch episodes on youtube, but I don't download as a rule because 1. I'm not quite sure how to do it 2. it strikes me as a good way to get viruses 3. it strikes me as a bit more illegal than watching the episodes on youtube.
However, there the episode sat. Very strange.
Quote:
-the Doctor's just been shot-
Harry: "I thought you were dead!"
-the Doctor pulls something shiny out of his pocket-
The Doctor: "A piece of the shuttle casing from Nerva. Never know when these bits and pieces will come in handy. Never throw anything away Harry."
-throws it away-
Harry: "Er... yes"
-Doctor rustles through pockets-
The Doctor: "Now, where did I put my 500 year diary? I had something writen down on the Sontarans. It's a mistake to clutter your pockets Harry."
Harry: "..."

such is Tom's awesomeness that i was persuaded to join the forum just because of the thread relating to his awesomeness level. It surely can not be comprehended by our mere mortal minds but we can strive through our adoration of the one whom we call Tom (and usually the Doctor) So it is because of the awesomeness of Tom that I say hello and very cool forum.

Hello devi4doctor... I'm sorry to hear that you're a mere micro-organism, but at least you're not afraid to start at the bottom....

Who On Earth is Tom Baker? youtube.com/watch?v=7gL78iwHEA4I've only watched half of the first part (and Tom is completely nuts) but good so far. Tom gets into a cab and the driver looks at him "I know who you are!" "Sighs... I'll bet you do" "Yep, and I must say it's a pleasure to have you in my cab Mr. Pertwee" ;D

I'm sorry, but I don't see TB as that awesome. He sort of rubs me the wrong way. Kind of creepy and mean, really.

I think my room mate put it best when she said that Tom is great fun to watch but he probably shouldn't be allowed out of the TV, ever, because he probably eats kittens or something. Tom is creepy. However, Tom is still awesome win (it's the scarf!!!) All the Doctors are awesome in their own special ways.

Tom is just considered The Doctor since he was on the longest and for many fans he was their first Doctor.

He's got charisma on his side though, and the scarf, the most amazing voices in history.
But, yeah, I would say that he's often over-rated based on his long tenure, and a lot of his later episodes are completely unwatchable (there a bunch I haven't seen the endings to because I just couldn't watch past the first ten-twenty minutes).
His first three seasons are the bomb though. There is a reason that Four, Sarah-Jane and Harry are the archetype classic team TARDIS. And, I think of all the actors, Tom did the best at portraying the Doctor-as-an-alien.
