From what I've read the production crew have been trying desperately to get her into proper trousers just for practical reasons (aka it's REALLY cold!) and she keeps refusing them, saying that they don't suit her character.
Which makes me wonder about her character. (and sanity)
If nothing else though, that girl suffers for her art!

Following is the insanity to which I am referring, it's from DWM, and it frightens me that we will be watching Dawson's Creek version of DW WARNING the site this interview is posted on is populated with fangirls of the fangurlz OMG variety, but the interview, though saddening, is worth the read. community.livejournal.com/doctoreleven/99140.html

I can see your concerns, Merry. Definitely. To play devil's advocate for a moment, it's not the most in-depth interview, is it? And you know, actors; actors are stupid, they say stupid things that may or may not have a bearing on the quality of the finished product. Well known for it. Well, they are now that I've said it... ;D
Like Agent Mulder, I want to believe right now. I really do. I want to keep positive and keep kidding myself that we're entering some new golden age of DW, just for these next couple of months. It makes me happy. Of course, when S5 airs and I am rudely disabused of these illusions, I will be willing to concede the point and put the boot in...
But for now, I'll be over here in this corner with my hands on my hears going la la la la la Eleven's gonna be awesome la la la la la he'll be awesome la la la la la...
;D
Whatever happens, we've got classic Who - they can't take that away from us...

Not to sound like a grumpy old curmudgeon or anything, but I really think people are outside hitching up the horse while the cart is still inside the barn.
There is talk that Matt and Karen have chemistry, and their characters have affection and love for each other. So what? Donna and Ten had chemistry and loved each other, and most fans enjoyed that relationship a lot. It seems particularly prevalent these days that when the word love is used people always assume that it is referring to something sexual, but I'm sure we all have people that we love in a completely platonic way.
Moffat has called Karen beautiful and sexy. So what? If you have eyes you can see that she's beautiful. I'll leave it up to people attracted to women to decide whether or not she is sexy, but most of the guys I know would like her. As for Matt, if Moffat was really trying to appeal to panting fangirls he could have cast a thousand actors who are better looking.
When you look at the history of the show objectively you see mostly a long line of attractive female companions, and the males who made it aboard the TARDIS weren't shabby either. There was plenty of flirting on the show even as far back as the era of One, it was just more subtle because that was the way television was then. I don't understand why everyone acts as though this is a radical development since the show was revived. Is there more overt flirting today? Yes. Does the Doctor (gasp) get kissed? Yes. Guess what . . . that is called the way television is today. If you don't build and maintain a large enough audience your show doesn't get the budget to be made well, and then it won't stay on the air.
What I'm really trying to say is, don't let the PR machine drive you crazy. All we've seen is a couple of minutes of clips, and some poor quality photos and videos shot by fans from a distance. So far it seems to me that he has an interesting interpretation of the Doctor, and I look forward to seeing more. The stories sound interesting, and I look forward to seeing them. The fact that Moffat has been a huge fan since childhood, and wrote some of the best stories for Nine and Ten, provide an extra layer of comfort for me.
Let's try to give things the benefit of the doubt until they prove to us that we shouldn't.

I rather enjoyed that interview actually. It struck me as a good bit of fun, and it's nice to know that the leads get on with each other.
The line: "2010 is shaping up to be the year of Tim Burton-esque fairytales and broken TARDIS consoles" did a lot to hearten me, because Tim Buton-esque is probably how I'd describe the Moffat-episodes that have already been done, and I've liked those, generally. There was a certain one, with a library, you might have heard of it... but my problems with that were less with plot and more with characterization, so we shall see.
The random little detour they take half-way through to comment on how insanely skinny David Tennant is amused me greatly. I can't be the only one who spent his entire tenure wanting to give him a sandwich. No? Okay... shuffling off then...
And it IS the actress lobbying for the skirts, not the production team (which makes me wonder about her sanity, but, then again, Jo pulled off the same...). I just hope those skirts don't get put down to Moffat's sexism or something. I'm not saying he isn't (or is, for that matter), but the skirts are all down to Karen. And as LL says, she is a very attractive young woman. You'd have to be blind to deny that.
My favourite bit out of the whole thing though? Matt describing the TARDIS:
"Wherever you put it, it doesn't matter what landscape you put it in, it looks like, i don't know, someone brilliant has gone...kind of, Picasso's gone 'Right.' and placed it perfectly on a beach or...even when it's in a room, it really dominates. You go 'Wow!'"

ACK! Wow and I thought I was the old fogey (Lol, kidding LL). I worry (I'm a mommy and a capricorn it's what I do, in fact, i worry like some people breathe; my oldest daughter says if I were a carebear I'd be Worrybear), sometimes I worry ALOT and this coupled with other lovely little Moffat soundbites (fans don't care about what's INSIDE the TARDIS only what's OUTSIDE// he has NO interest in bringing back any classic villians) worries me greatly, I, like Mulder and JJ want to believe and until just recently had no problem doing so. While the actress may be picking tiny skirts she is picking them because they fit her character, the character Moffat wrote, is she perhaps a stripper? I know but wouldn't it explain the cop outfit as well? As this is a british kids show the show needs a Liz Shaw direly. An intelligent woman who DOESN'T love the Doctor because only Donna hasn't and no offense, but Donna mindwiped is NOT really a role model for little girls. Also, I realise love doesn't mean sex, it's kinda my line of work, mind but they also have been quoted (Matt Smith at least) saying "Love sparks fly" between Amy and Eleven, new man or not I'd prefer to see something carry over (after all it nearly always has before even Nine to Ten) and adding these facts to Moffat's CLEAN SLATE and the odd insistence of calling it series One makes me wonder just what show they are writng, I am terrified it will Dawson's Creek and not Doctor Who at all, well Dawson's Creek with aliens and a brand new sonic. At any rate, I am breaking ,my rule and posting before my first cup of coffee is gone, please don't be angry at me, I am just sharing my worries, hoping you lot can alleviate them.

Liz Shaw isn't the best example Merry; have you SEEN some of her outfits? My room mate and I have spent entire episodes with her going "excuse me Ms., but you seem to have forgot your trousers..."
O.o
That said, I think I can alleviate some of your fears:
1. The series 1 thing, far as I know, is a BBC production office choice and won't be making it onto DVD covers. It's just to make managing finances easier. I think. If I'm wrong about this I'll be groaning just as much as the rest of you.
2. Classic villains Moffat may like not, but there will be Daleks AND Silurians in the next series. I have seen pictures.
3. The are pictures of the inside of the TARDIS in the trailer, and it's rumoured that at least one episode is heavily TARDIS-based
4. Moffat says "clean break", but there is a clip of some fan recorded dialogue floating around that VERY much suggests otherwise. Shouting "I sent you back into the void!" at a Dalek suggests that the continuity is still alive and kicking (unlike the other points on this list, this does NOT make me happy)

You go 'Wow!'"That's lovely. And true. And boosts my confidence in the boy Smith. I think some people are worried because he's very candid about not being a Who fan and I think had never seen any classic Who before being cast, but then again not every actor is David Tennant! ;D And I think that shows that he "gets" something, on a very basic, actorly sort of level about the show and its mythos and the Doctor. Yes. And I love the way he bounced around in that Youtube vid, and in the trailer; something about his body language and mannerisms that didn't come across as much in the still photos. An energy and quirkiness that may be slightly reminiscent of Ten, but nevertheless is its own thing at the same time. I realise I may be off in full-blown la la la la territory, gushing embarrassingly etc, but seeing little glimpses of Eleven like this heartens me somehow, as did the long-awaited proper promo pic. Hey, at least he didn't have that ferret-in-the-headlights-of-an-oncoming-truck expression Tennant always used to do in his promotional photos for Who! ;D I kid, I kid... ;D So yeah, in my happy little cloud cuckoo land, I'm putting some of the more worrying murmurings coming from Team Moff down to RTD-style overenthusiastic PR and trying to accentuate the positive, etc. I mean, how many times did we hear Rusty say that the upcoming companion or pseudo-companion was the bestest, bravest, cleverest, closest-to-the-Doctorest one EVER!? And Clocket, I'd forgotten about the * SILURIANS!* la la la la la la la...

Heh, Merry, I too worry about everything, including stuff that should be fun. I very, very much doubt that Amy is a stripper, as Who is supposed to be ''family'' show. I think that ''suiting her character'' is supposed to mean that it's just something she decided to add to the character to give her a little quirk, just like like with various Doctors and their outfits (Four's scarf, Five's cellery, Ten's Converse etc). I think no matter what Moffat says, he still recognises that he's still running a show that, put together, has been on the screen for thirty years, and has some established traditions. The Daleks appeared in the show's second ever story, and are as famous as the TARDIS and the Doctor himself. Moffat has also been on record (or so I heard) about saying that Gallifrey canon bores him, but I also doubt that we've heard the last mention of the planet, or that the Doctor is ''over it'', or at least I hope not; I certainly don't want Eleven to be as emo as Ten, but I still want him to care and be affected by mentions of it. A mournful mention of Romana would make me a very happy camper

While I'm in rabid Eleven fan mode (I'll start going OMG all the time and spelling things wrong and losing the use of my capslock key in a minute... ;D), I found this interesting: community.livejournal.com/doctorwho/5537669.htmlBut especially this bit: "I have no problem in calling it Series Thirty-One. In fact, I'd rather call it Series Thirty-One, because that means it's immortal. It's an incredible achievement to have that number of shows and that level of success. It's become a slight issue with me over the years, that people like to pretend that it only got good in 2005. That is not true, It was already a phenomenon and every single huge, iconic success in Doctor Who was in place by about 1970. So we should honour our past, because that's where the sonic screwdriver and regeneration and the Doctor and police box adn the TARDIS all come from."Right on, Moff, you appalling sexist you! ;D

I want to apologize. I got a little preachy in my post, which wasn't my intention. It was good to read, plus a totally stole a new icon from someone who had commented. I couldn't help myself, because it made me LOL.

Right on with the icon theft LL. It made me lol also. Very shiny.
For my part I'm going to just keep calling it series 5b/ series 6 and confusing the hell out of all and sundry.
But series 31 has a lovely ring to it as well. Like the Moff says: "It's epic and immortal!"
(also, the branding people confuse the hell out of me. Aging brand my rear. They *do* realize that all they're accomplishing is to confuse people. Seriously. It's not series 1 any way you slice it.)

Well, I reckon it's series one for Matt....I do have more to say but will come back and add to this later TIMELOOP EDIT: right, so thank you all, I do feel a bit less concerned, though I still wish like heck that Gaiman was on board this series. Regarding Liz and her barely there outfits, I think that's great, girls (especially little ones) need to know that smart isn't a death sentence socially, it's wonderful to see powerful, intelligent women who aren't afraid of their femininity. Too often, especially on television the smart girl is a "geek" (even Buffy the most girl-powered show we've had in a looooong time fell prey to this) and good on anyone who is a smart, sexy, female woman, we oughtn't have to lose our girlishness, as it were, in order to be taken seriously so I say smart girls wear tiny skirts and high heels and show 'em who is boss!

My, my, I'm obviously the dullest person around here, because I haven't jheard any Moffat comments (sexist or otherwise), I'm still avoiding spoilers, and I'm going with the incredibly old-fashioned option of deciding what I think of Eleven when I see him in action. So far, a minute, plus a trailer have left me with a really good impression. I can see I'm going to be no use round here for while - bye, see you all in Spring 2010 (whenever that actually is).

Oh, there you go bringing rationality into the discussion... ;D I'm with Moffat on the immortality and Series 31 and his derision for the idea that it only got good in 2005 (because as shocking as I hope that it for all of us, it seems to be pretty much the opinion in the mainstream media), but I'd probably take issue with him citing the sonic screwdriver as one of Who's iconic sort of elements. I mean, it's convenient and all, but I'm a bit sick of it being used to do just about anything the script requires (apart from driving screws!); it's one of the few things I wholeheartedly agree with John Nathan-Turner on... ;D

All right, so I warn you; the below link = MASSIVE SPOILERS!! Yes, that's right - ENORMOUS SPOILERS!! I'm not kidding - if you click the below link, you will be as SPOILED as the Sultan of Brunei's only child! So, I don't want anyone reading this and then complaining about me ruining their enjoyment of Season 5, because I was quite upfront about the presence of GIGANTIC, STUPENDOUS, EPIC!! SPOILERS!!!! But, having said all of that: community.livejournal.com/doctoreleven/117948.html* Eleven bursts out of a giant stripper cake???!!! CAKE!!!! It doesn't say whether he's clothed or not, but even so I'd say that's some sort of collective dream come true for DbyA - even the Moff is getting with the cakefic programme! ;D ;D ;D ;D
And in other news, according to that hallowed news organ The Scum, the reason Amy's wearing the improbable policewoman outfit is that she works as a kissogram. So, those of you who thought she was a stripper or something were wrong. Completely wrong... And again the Moff does nothing for his reputation in the field of gender relations...*

I'm not listening to the Scum, because it's obvious that they're basing that all on the skirt and it's been confirmed that was Karen's request. Also, she HAS in fact been spotted wearing trousers on set. So, um...
But the other thing...
*dies laughing forever*

I'm listening to the Sun, for the moment, as it fits my version of truth but as for the other...
Does this mean we the denizens of DbA were just a bit ahead of our time and twas eleven in the cake? RTD is all but guilty of songfic (LotTL) and Moffat seems to be guilty of cakefic....there's something to that but I am not awake enough to figure it out yet, blah! Here's fingers crossing, hurry up spring, I don't wait well, makes me nervous
