I really liked Martha the first time i watched it, rewatching it, I just don't. I find her to be irritating and sad. She has the whole of time and space before her and all she can do is whine because a twisted up borderline sociopath (albeit a noble one) won't love her back? She also tends to be terribly frightened until a. the doctor shows up or b. someone she knows (usually a man) is there to see her be so. But you're right this is sooo not daleks...well, unless, genetic altering and all maybe Martha Jones is related?

Thanks jjpor.
Daleks in Manhattan seemas like a series of dares or challenges to me, from RTD to me as a viewer. Here, just try to continue to like Dr Who even though it has... look, talking pigs for no apparent reason! A NYC which seems like a small encampment and a building site with an elevator and a handful of workers, surrounded by hundreds of big vacated (it feels that way) buildings... Exaggerated cliches that make it impossible to decide whether it's meant to be camp or serious... an unredeemable "can't we all just get along" speech... I'll stop listing complaints-- but this story is like an obstacle course to get through, and I'm not up for struggling that hard to like a TV story.
They all act as if there isn't a city out there that they need to interact with.

From a plot point of view, I don't mind RTD bringing them back every series. After all, one had 4 dalek stories, two had 2 dalek stories, three had 3 dalek stories, four had 2 dalek stories, and five, six and seven all had 1 dalek story during their tenure. Nine having 2 dalek stories, and ten having three doesn't really seem excessive from my point of view, though I don't really think the stories are as successfull as 'lonely survivor dalek' stories, as opposed to 'powerful deadly race' dalek stories.
As for aesthetics though, I like the use of a big blue light in the eyestalk, as opposed to the big black dot used for their eyes in the classic series.

It has been interesting to read this thread, because I like the Dalek 2 parter in series 3, and I know a lot of fans don't. I didn't like the pig slaves, and I thought that the transformed Sec was one of the most seriously disturbing things I have ever seen, but overall I liked the concept of the story. I also liked that it was set in NYC during the depression.
I thought that it was interesting to see the Doctor willing to make a deal with the devil (so to speak) if it meant changing the Daleks and thereby reducing the threat that they represent to the universe. Not killing Caan seems completely in character, and had the nice tie back to the past.
As for Martha, I thought that this was good foreshadowing of the role she was going to play by the end of the series. He trusted her to figure out what she needed to do with the psychic paper, she figured out that the Dalekanium was critical and where they put it, he asked her to fight so he could focus on removing the Dalekanium, and she figured out how to stop the pig slaves. In fact, from this point in the series on the episodes keep building toward her being able to act independently and succeed without the Doctor. Let's face it, Rose would never have left the Valiant to walk the world to defeat the Master. Neither would Donna.

I personally can't stand that two-parter, but that may be because I'm actually from New York City and I thought it was one of the worse historical depictions of my beloved city I've ever seen. Tallulah was a cardboard caricature of a New Yorker, and nothing in the episode actually looked like New York at all. Also, the science was bad even for DW. I mean, TIme Lord DNA being infused with Dalek and human because a bolt of lightning passed through him? Since when does lightning transmit DNA? I hardly need mention how unnecessary and disturbing the human!Dalek Sec and the pig slaves were.
It's really the only episode in Season 3 I don't like. Everything else is gold. (Also the ending of "The Last of the Time Lords" but I try to pretend that Tinkerbell Jesus never happened.)

I think you've forgotten that the daleks can elevate. All they'd have to do is elevate and turn themselves around!
