* Paul Cornell posted on Twitter that the new companion had been announced, so I went looking for info. Her name is Karen Gillan, and apparently she played one of the soothsayers in "The Fires of Pompeii."
New 'Doctor Who' companion announced 29 May 2009 5:06 AM, PDT | From Digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news
21-year-old Karen Gillan has been named as the new companion for series five of Doctor Who. The Scottish actress will star alongside Matt Smith, who takes over from David Tennant as The Doctor in series five of the long-running cult show. "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion," said Gillan. "The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him - I just can't wait to get started!" Gillan previously appeared in Who as a soothsayer in the series four episode 'The Fires of Pompeii'. Her other credits include The Kevin Bishop Show, Rebus (more).

*Ooh, she was the red-haired soothsayer. I thought she looked really funny, because the red of her hair completely clashed with the red robes they were wearing. I saw her age, 21, and freaked out for a tiny bit and then I was like "oh yeah. the Docotor's 26; of course he's going to have a young companion" because someone like Donna would seem like his mother or something*

Text white out due to post being major spoilers. Picture is linked. Just a friendly reminder to everyone to white out your text. If you don't know how, just ask someone. They will help you out. I'm sorry, since it had nothing to do with storyline I didn't think it constituted a spoiler. Mea culpa! ;D

Aunty Beeb's take: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8073734.stmThoughts (whited, although, you know, I've been thinking about this, and I'm not sure the actor's name/appearance actually constitutes much of a spoiler, I mean, it's not like the identity of the next Doctor or anything. Still:) * Well, Moff, you've failed in your first opportunity to surprise me by opting for a singular, female, early-twenties companion. Having said that, Lynda is right; a companion who appears older than the actual Doctor would create a weird vibe and might detract from Eleven's authority, him being such a young tyke himself. Still, I was hoping they might mix things up, try a male companion, or boy/girl companions, or something. I suppose from a purely ratings-based, TV executive sort of point of view, if the formula ain't broke, don't fix it, right? (answers on a postcard as to whether or not you think it's broke!)
Of course, the Moff's second chance to surprise me is if he makes her a Victorian, or a cavewoman, or an alien from the year 4000, as opposed to a hip, contemporary inhabitant of the early 21st century. Somehow, I don't think he's going to surprise me on this count either...
Gotta love/laugh at the BBC guy's insightful analysis that "the companion's role is much more important nowadays than it was in the past." You haven't watched a single episode of oldschool Who have you, mate? ;D
Having said all of that; she is a redhead. I dig redheads. ;D*

** [white] I was really hoping for at least a couple different companions.. a female and male or something. I'm a little disappointed at the single young female thing again.
I really believe they could have worked the older then the Doctor thing well, if it had been well written and Matt Smith could still portray some authority and age in his performance.
But.. she is beautiful. And I'm still looking forward to seeing what comes of this. Maybe she'll be from a different time period then the 21st Century. I hope so. [/white] **

** I think it would be great if she is an alien. Also, they could add an additional companion part-way through the season, instead of introducing both at once. **

Thanks for doing the mod thing Newton. I've been overly occupied with work lately *sighs*
Also, don't look now, but is JJ less than 80 posts way from the Time Lord mark?
...and back on topic...
I gotta say, I'm slightly disappointed with the hip young ""funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy" companion (gah, they might as well have said plucky). I was kind of interested in seeing an older companion because I like weirdness like that, or a boy-girl mix up... now I'm dreadfully afraid of smooch fests, but, er... Well, one can only hope. Okay, I'll admit it, I was hoping for Donna and Wilf and that was never gonna happen so, *shrugs* I am hoping she's not temporally contemporary though, because there's only o much you can take... According to the article she's Scottish, which intrigues me greatly (I'm already imaging ways for them to name drop Jamie...)

No problem, that is why I am here. Also, am I the only one who does not trust JJ becoming a timelord? He has tricks up his sleeve, I swear he does!!!! Then again you lot sure love giving power to the most untruest worthy people.

*First thought: Young! I didn't want a young one hmmph grumble grumble. Second thought: She's pretty. Third: Romance again? Please no. Fourth: But she's Scottish and ginger and also pretty. Yay.
So for now, when we know so little about her, I'm choosing to be optimistic.*

Er, I mean; I'm quite looking forward to becoming a Time Lord; really, I am. And no sinister plans for the future, either. No, not me! Thought: * I could totally live with the idea of her being Jamie's long-lost younger sister or something... Make it so, Moffat!!!*

I've been concealing being a member of the Innuendo Squad... I'm somewhat more open about it on other boards. I have the t-shirt and everything.
The shortest Trek-Who crossover ever, especially since it manages to work in the Land of Fiction. A very efficient job my friend.
I wonder if I'm a Time Lord yet. I can't check 'till I'm done posting this. Funny how one can just cross an invisible boundary into being a Time Lord without knowing it. I suppose guys in bowlers will unexpectedly be hovering in mid-air next to me (jjpor certainly) when I (or jjpor) am (is) having a nice time looking over a radio telescope, wanting me (and/or jjpor) to go God-knows-where to do whatever, now.
Morphing from a Dalek into a Time Lord sounds problematic is some way too. I think I'm a Dalek now. People usually know when they're Daleks. Me, I gotta check.
My computing device is Googling Karen Gillan as we speak.
Me too LL. The thing that would give me the greatest hope right now would be for Moffat to announce "I like aliens. I like other planets. The Doctor should really go to a few."

Morphing from a Dalek into a Time Lord sounds problematic is some way too. Shhh! Don't give away RTD's big twist ending for the Xmas Special!! ;D I wish I had an Innuendo Squad t-shirt, but I guess it's something you have to earn through years of hard service...

*Well, me, I'm completely open minded. I'd be a little worried that this would turn to smooch fests, except I half think that was all David Tennant's doing.
Anyway, I'd like to see a male companion, thanks. I don't really count Mickey and Capt. Jack.*
