I've hit a fic-block, and it's a really silly one. So I had this line:
Besides, the way she saw it, the Professor and fashion was like a painted-up footballer at a science convention: you got the impression that they didn’t quite know what was going on, but you didn’t ask too many questions.
And I liked it, but my British Brit-picker tells me that the cultural translation is off, and that the UK doesn't really have that whole Nerds vs. Jocks things anyways. Which I nominally knew.
So, um, British DbyAers, do you think the analogy works?
And, everyone, any other possible comparisons I could use? I could just delete the line, it's completely un-plot connected, but I *like* it.

Hows abouts: "The Professor and fashion were a bit like a football hooligan at a cricket match; he wasn't welcome, but he didn't really want to be there either, except to offend any onlookers by causing a bit of a scene."

I think it must be universal that the most rabid sports fans probably aren't big on the sciences.

perhaps try reversing the analogy somehow? Rather than make him the jock at a fashion show make him a scientist at a football game, he isn't there to play the game just make observations or the like? Not that, but along those lines, that way you have the incongruity but it's relateable enough that everyone senses the mismatch and it still has a british air.

Tell me about it. I've spent this millennium that way. Granted, that would mean more 990 years from now... If there such things as science conventions cp, that's a cultural pocket that you could inform us about through your story. If that's just a momentary detour or detail though, we wouldn't know enough about it to be able to understand or identify. Personally I'd rather not reverse the analogy, since DW at its best is about presenting new points of view. It might be nice to show a jock-ish person out of his element in science-town; a sports geek out-of-water. But then, I have no clue where the story is supposed to go. Nationality may make little difference except for slang. Oh wait I forgot, I've never been outside of North America....! So, don't listen to me....
