Didn't see any thread like this yet...
Are there any characters that would have made great companions, but were never given the chance? My knowledge is severely limited, but in the new series I know it's been said by a lot of people that Sally Sparrow would have made a fantastic long-term character. Any others you can think of?

Definitely agree with Sally Sparrow, she would've been the most awesome companion! And she could've brought along Larry and that would've hopefully ended the New Series problem of companions falling for the Doctor. Unless, of course, Rusty wrote everything. But. I'm digressing.
And for Voyage of the Damned (don't believe this is really a spoiler), I would've loved it if Mr Copper had been the next companion (mostly just 'cos I adore Clive Swift), but apparently the Doctor only takes young, attractive women nowadays.
As for Classic, I'll have to think on it a while, 'cos when my mind tries to do a quick scan of Classic, it decides to crash due to the sheer volume of information.

Yes, I would have loved to see Mr. Cooper as an companion, because he's so different than the New!Who stereotype, single [usually blond] young women.

We need a good original companion in New!Who. That isn't a love interest, dammit!
Returning to the topic, even though the UNIT team are sort of considered companions, I would've liked to see them (at least a few) travel with the Doctor and see their reactions to different planets and the like. And though Harry was a companion, I think he should've had some more serials. Or at least a proper goodbye.
Still thinking of other Classic characters that'd make good companions... There aren't many, as anyone other than the Doctor and his companions are usually antagonists...

Jabe the tree-lady would have made a good companion, I think, and Lynda, from the New Series. And Mr. Copper would have been great (that really made me angry how the Doctor offered to take along Astrid but then when Mr. Copper wanted to join he suddenly "travels alone"). As for classic, it is a bit harder to think of them, but I think the werewolf lady from the Greatest Show in the Galaxy would have made a great companion.

Let me first say you are wrong. The latest show hasn't just had 'young attractive women' or 'blondes.' What about Mickey, Adam and Jack? What about Jackie and Pete? Then what about the companions who assisted the Doctor in single episodes, but just never had the chance to come aboard the ship for a trip, like Ida, Tommy, Linda, Zack, Gwyneth, Alonzo, Shakespeare, and Martha's sister. All of who were vital friends and companions that meant the difference between success and death. *steps off soap box* Now speaking of Sally, I completely agree she'd have been a fine companion and so would have been Mr. Copper. I still think we might see him again since he is on Earth. But what about Mags from the Seventh Doctor episode The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. She was cool and really could have added a new level to the show. Or Pex from Paradise Towers... he might have been a coward but imagine how he could have developed and grown. I also think the female scientist in Aliens in London (the one played by the actress who plays Tosh on Torchwood). She could have a been an interesting companion, if they had developed her a bit more. If there is any kind of issue with the new series companions, it's not that most of the companions of female, but almost all come from the current time period and Earth. In the old days the Doctor picked up companions from various planets, various times, and from various species. I want that again. I want to see more variety. Astrid, if she had lived, who have been the first interstellar companion in sometime. I would have turned the other cheek willingly just to see a perspective not from Earth, like Nyssa or Adric or Leela were. Definitely agree with Sally Sparrow, she would've been the most awesome companion! And she could've brought along Larry and that would've hopefully ended the New Series problem of companions falling for the Doctor. Unless, of course, Rusty wrote everything. But. I'm digressing. I was only counting female companions, but that's a valid point. And it was really an exaggeration. But it's only really the long-term companions that they worry about, one-episode people can look like anything, but now it seems the official 'Doctor's companion' has to be at least slightly attractive. And yes, I know Classic did it too with the whole 'Leela for the fathers' thing. But did Four snog Leela? No!
I quite agree! We need some alien companions. Or at least humans from different time periods.

Okay, then we've reached some what of an understanding. ;D That's great! And I'm willing to give a bit on your specification. The long term companions do tend to be more 'attractive' as you put it and female. But part of me wonders if that's only because those actors just tend to stay longer. Perhaps John and Noel would have stuck around for a bit longer... if Jack didn't join TW for exmaple Any who, here's hoping the future companions are more varied (planet, time, species) and less shippy (step away from Doctor/?). I was only counting female companions, but that's a valid point. And it was really an exaggeration. Shippyness has no place in canon. That's what fandom is for.

Here's another missed opportunity that's always seemed a bit of a shame - Liz Shaw, despite being the "Companion" for the entire seventh series, never gets to travel in the TARDIS with the Third Doctor! (On screen, anyway. She gets her chance in the spinoff media!)
I've always been a fan of the Third Doctor's era because we get a bit more of a dynamic going that's not entirely based on the Doctor/Companion relationship (the UNIT family, for one). It must be really tricky to keep things interesting on a personal level for just two principals!
I'd love to see more off-world companions, if only for that different perspective.

I'm stuck at 1/3 of the way through season 29. I'll bet, though, that RTD is still avoiding other planets, so an alien companion is a bit too much to hope for.

A thought just struck me. What about an Ood as a companion?
What do you girls and guys think?
Something different, very loyal and always helpful ;D

It would be interesting... People might overreact and see it as a slave to the Doctor or something, though. (Have you seen the water pistol reactions?)

No and I don't. People are weird. They take real guns but not plastic ones. And it isn't like the Doctor has never picked up a gun before.

I'd like an alien companion as well, and as much as I like Sally, isn't she EXACTLY what you lot are complaining about? Youngm, attractive and blonde. I'm all for companions out of their time as well as off-Earth companions. I didn't like Jabe, she was a hussy, lol. I agree Shakespeare would have been fun, but aside from that I haven't really cared much for most of the one shots in the new series. (see the mickey thread lol) That being said the few I DID like are vastly unpopular so there ya go, maybe you oughtn't take my word for it.

Lol, but everyone's entitled to their opinions, even the Rose lovers - I mean, with so many fans she must be doing *something* right, even if, personally, I started getting irked by her as soon as Nine left (but then, I started getting irked by a lot of things as soon as Nine left...) And I like Mel, and as such probably shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion on anything. But I'd love to see some non-contemporaneous companions, like Zoe and Jamie (hey, that would be a return to the Classic Doctor, Girl-companion, Boy-companion TARDIS config too). Having a companion from the past would be so much fun, and having them discover the technological Revelation, and the Internet and stuff. Or... a companion from a different country? Actually, I'm wittering on, but Jack was from the future, sort-of American (or Boevian or something...), and. well, Jack. I really liked Jack before he went all immortal and TW and... well, TW and I just don't quite agree with each other. Mr. Cooper would have been an AWESOME companion and I too was disappointed at his dismissal. ANYWAY, to conclude, if the show wants to bring in some random companions, I'd love to see CGI Frobisher, or, even more daring, a companion who wears glasses (how strange would THAT be???)

Don't get me started on that. The Doctor was an playdoo factory to him. Pretty much he was like "You're not a young sexy girl that crawls all over me begging to be my lover, so GTFO kthnxbi"
Oh I get so angry. So very very angry. This text does not show my anger.

It's been said elsewhere, but I think that having a boy-girl companion duo would be a positive move, as it would take away the needy-companion-pining-over-the-Doctor thing which, quite honestly, I've had enough of by now. That's one reason I like Donna - there was no romantic subplot, they really were "just" friends. Not that I object to romance on principle, you understand, just when it gets in the way of the kewl monsters and effects and heroic resistance to villainous plots and all of that good stuff. ;D The idea that the companion must be a contemporary Earthling with family issues is just one of RTD's self-imposed rules; you can sort of see how it made sense when the new series was establishing itself, but now that it has its feet under the table, so to speak, I hope Moffat will take some more risks. Just as long as he doesn't bring Jenny back - yes, she's easy on the eye, but the whole concept of the character is just broken. A non-contemporary and/or non-human main companion is on my wishlist along with such other things as a "straight" historical and past-Doctor cameo appearances (Davison was brilliant in Time Crash) that I suspect will never come to pass...

Sally Sparrow would have been a good pick. As would have Dugan. (He delivered possibly the most important punch in history, after all.) and Astrid... if she didn't throw herself into a pit of molten lava. She was cool up to that point... though Bartakaffalata was kinda... ew. I admire the lack of heightisim in that story, though. lol.

I like Sally, I DO. I just don't get why everyone thinks she is so great. As far as Mister Copper, he was old, very old said he wouldn't survive a prison term, that hardly sounds like companion material to me. What if he broke a hip? Besides, the Doctor didn't leave him to be mean, Astrid snuck in under his defences and promptly reminded him why he had established those defences in the first place. He wouldn't have taken anyone in those few moments following the doomed Titanic voyage. I don;t think he would have even allowed Rose back on had she turned up magically next to the TARDIS all packed and ready.
