Okay, so I know there are many combinations that technically could be examined for this inquire, if you go back into old Who, but I'm focusing solely on the new Who for this question. It has been buzzing around my head for a bit and I thought I'd love to get your guys and girls take on it.
Which version of the TARDIS team do you think was better: Doctor/Rose/Jack or Doctor/Martha/Jack?
I'm not asking in terms of do you like the characters or a series (season), but more about their dynamic together as friends, heroes, champions, etc. I think it is fair to look at these two alone, since they were teamed up for similar amount of episodes.
Also why do you think they were better?

Doctor Rose Jack.
Look, as much as I despise Rose, I liked this particular combo better because it gave her something else to sniff, and she wasn't AS clingy-clingy to the doctor. And... she did make the doctor dance. I gotta give her some points there.

My favorite ALL TIME trio still remains to be Harry, Sarah and the Doctor, but of the two choices given...
Doctor, Martha, Jack.
Just because Jack was funnier in that season and Martha is just THAT much better than rose.
And their friend dynamics seemed more stable. Like the doctor and Jack weren't constantly fighting over the girl. And Jack seemed to lower tensions in that group.

I like Nine/Rose/Jack because, well, I prefer Nine to Ten, Jack was pretty darn cool before he got involved with those TW people and became immortal and stuff, and Rose didn't really bother me first season.
they also had that cute dorky cheer: Into Time! And Space!
Mickey: have you guys seen yourselves? *eyeroll*
;D
though, my fav ever Tardis Trios: Four/Harry/Sarah Two/Jamie/Zoe Seven/Hex/Ace (even if they don't really count)
oh, and that odd love-square thing between Jo/Three/Benton/Yates that's just precious. especially when the Master starts getting jealous.

Do Four/Romana/K-9 count as a trio? Cos I like their style, even if they did seem to constantly be thinking of ways of writing poor K-9 out of the stories...
Or, given my current Season 18 love - Four/Romana/Adric. It only lasts for two stories, but it's great - Four is basically the most irresponsible but cool babysitter ever, Romana's the bossy big sister, and Adric's just...a snotty little know-it-all. And I mean that as a compliment.

I'm not familiar enough with NuWho to really say - but I just wanted to stuff my little rumpled ballot in the box for Two-Jamie-Victoria.
Carry on!

Everyone at UNIT is trying to sweep Jo off her feet: Benton makes her tea Yates makes her hot chocolate (using the Doctor's sensitive lab equipment as a stove) The Doctor whisks her through time and space (and the Master gets jealous and concots evil plots) Then Jo breaks all their hearts by running off to marry the Welshman.

Even more adorable and bittersweet that she leaves the Doctor for a man who reminds her of the Doctor, just human. Ah yes, poor Yates.. he finally gets her to go on a date with him and the Doctor whisks her away to Peladon instead. It's cute!

Poor Yates. He kept trying and the Doctor just kept whisking her away in the TARDIS.

Hmm. Well I'd have to say Doctor/Rose/Jack. Their personalities are more diverse and seem to compliment the others. Where one isn't apt the others would compensate for.
Though I like neither Rose nor Martha. Donna all the way for NuWho.

It is just for Rose/Jack/Doctor and Martha/Jack/Doctor, but others seem to be adding other choices. That's fine, but please also give your opinion about the original point as well. In general, I wish that we had had more trios. Four/Sarah/Imbecile was... Four with another man to relate to was interesting. For awhile, Harry was a sort of professional colleague. I'm not saying that he ought to have waited until a man came along to feel he had a colleague, but he seemed to react that way.

Well, technically there were a few in the early Doctors, and I'm not just talking about when Jamie (Doctor/Jamie/Victoria & Doctor/Jamie/Zoe) or Ian (Doctor/Ian/Barbara) was there. If you look at the First Doctor's time. He had Steven with Dodo and Steven with Katarina, I think, also Steven with Vicki. I think prior to Harry... both Steven and Ian were, as you said, "a sort of professional colleague," someone he could talk to on the level without talking down or leaving out of the looop on his plans. Then of course, there was Ben with Polly. But I haven't seen much of their eps, so I don't know what kind of relationship he had with the Doctor both versions.

Having a trio in the TARDIS provides a different dynamic to just havingDoctor+companion, just as a male companion provides a different dynamic to a female one. NuWho has defaulted to the Doctor+1 female companion format, but the brief periods when first Jack and then Mickey were along for the ride mixed it up nicely, I thought. I'd like to see them return to this in Season Five; a boy/girl companion duo would be interesting I think; a companion who wasn't from Earth and/or the early 21st century would be welcome. I won't hold my breath, though.

My family was discussing a related topic in the car as we were driving, the whole 'darn I bet they'll just bring in another skinny beautiful young girl to drool on the Doctor' thing... which led to the stated desire for someone older (a good feisty grandma would be perfect)... which led to wondering how it might have gone if the Doctor could pick up a pair of old explorer curmudgeon scholars, like that wonderful pair of chaps in Talons of Weng-Chiang - those guys could have had their own show, they were awesome.
