Out of curiosity, was the opening theme for Naked Benton Unwillingly Transported Without Warning Throughout Time and Space Every Time He Sneezes Due to the Polarity of Something Not Being Reversed anything like the theme for K-9 and Company? It was very similar, but done in a sort of Bossa Nova style. With maracas. And vocals by the great John Levene. The main difference is that instead of K-9 repeating "K-9!.... K-9!.... K-9!" during the theme, John Levene keeps saying, "Benton!... Benton!... Benton!" The last time he says "Naked Benton!"

Are you making fun of the Welsh again? I love the Welsh; I love people of all races, creeds and nationalities, just like the Doctor would want me to. Seriously. Magnus was just poking fun at JNT, and I responded with an unwarranted dig at Russell T by way of joining in. Please don't come here with your brother in law and beat me up! ;D John Levene actually released the Naked Benton theme song as a single, back in the dark winter of 1979, and performed it on BBC1's flagship music program Top of the Pops; unfortunately, the sight of a naked man prancing about waving maracas resulted in more complaints than the show ever got in its entire history, Radio 1 banned the song from its playlist, and thus a great pop career was cut tragically short.

I wonder what Mary Whitehouse thought of that. No violence, she'd have liked that about it....

Benton makes me feel happy inside.
And Newton, no promises but if my evil neverending pile of homework ever lets up I'd love to make you a Benton banner.

By the way, John Levene once attended a Milwaukee Time Lords meeting, and I believe ended up marrying a member of the club. This would have been before my time in the club, in the 80s, but that's what they all say happened, and these are stable people.

That _IS_ the UNIT recruiting poster - well, I know I'd join if I saw Benton being all soldierly and manly and cool with a walkie-talkie and a devil-may-care expression on his face. Many a young lad was ensnared by this image in the 70s (or was it the 80s??!!) and joined up to be just like Benton. Unfortunately, many of them ended up getting their faces chewed off by some extradimensional tentacle-beastie in some quarry somewhere, and then the Brig had to give their distraught mums/wives/girlfriends some cover story about how they died in a training accident or something; what I'm saying, is that it isn't all good times in UNIT, so don't believe the recruiting adverts. Seriously, if you love UNIT and Three, read the sorta-NA novel Who Killed Kennedy?, which is available online, I think, and which addresses just these sort of issues. It is, as some of you might say, just a big load of win. In other thoughts, someone needs to write a fanfic addressing how it went from being the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce to the Unified Intelligence Taskforce; 'cause I want to know...

Though, I have a sneaking suspicion it might have something to do with the year that wasn't... Also, for the curious, I tracked down the link at which said ebook lies nzdwfc.tetrap.com/archive/wkk/I think I'm going to read this when I get more time... heavens help me... I'm reading the novels

As do I! Though, I have a sneaking suspicion it might have something to do with the year that wasn't... My personal theory (and I'll agree that it is kind of sad and fanboyish that I even have a theory), is that it was something to do with the Aliens of London/WW3 incident; Nine explicitly mentioned the United Nations when he saw those (strangely, all American-uniformed) UNIT representatives turn up for the Downing Street meeting. I think that the ignominious deaths of those representatives led to some sort of unfortunate political incident which led the particular member-nations who provided the bulk of UNIT manpower and funding (so, Britain, America and...er, Poland, it would seem, from the televised episodes) to call it quits with the UN and reboot UNIT as some sort of extra-UN treaty organisation along the lines of NATO or something. Yes, I'm aware that it is very sad of me to write the above involved paragraph about what is, after all, a very minor continuity issue. On the subject of the novels - read them, if you can! There are some seriously good ones available on the BBC website actually - The Dying Days, for instance, which is one of the very best of the whole NA range (and the only NA to feature Eight, actually, as well as making the Ice Warriors seem like a credible and threatening enemy), or Human Nature, upon which the (extremely good) NuWho two-parter of the same name was based, or The Well-Mannered War, which is a must if you love the Four/Romana II/K-9 combo, or Lungbarrow, which is sorta the ultimate Seven NA, or Nightshade, which is just brilliant. Really, read some of this stuff if you have the time: www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/ebooks/index.shtml

I've read Nightshade. I attempted reading Lungburrow but ended up backing away slowly after a few chapters. Dying Days I am *terrified* of reading because I've been told by a few people that Eight gets jiggy with his companion in it. Which is... some things I just prefer not thinking about.
So far this Kennedy book IS very very very good though. I'm quite astonished really, because I was not expecting this level of quality.

I too was surprised by the Kennedy book; when he started going on about "the notorious terrorist Victor Magister", etc, it made me LOL. Lungbarrow is probably "an acquired taste", I'll agree; it is allegedly based on the original script for Ghost Light, which was cut down considerably for the TV version. Seriously - read The Dying Days! It is my personal favourite NA novel. The "jiggy with companion" bit is just a throwaway line at the very end, for comic effect more than anything. It has Ice Warriors in it, being awesome! "Who is this Jesus Christ?! I would challenge him to single combat!!!" And the Brig, being awesome!! Seriously - read it!

Hmmm... I might now look at it...
Lungbarrow still scares me though. I didn't 'get' Ghostlight, so perhaps that's why (brilliant lines... "how much money?" but the story was... well... I dunno what the story was)
