Okay, so I was on facebook the other day, and I was skim-reading the Tom Baker page when I picked up an interesting tid-bit about Mr. Baker. So interesting, in fact, I need some confirmation to make sure it's a fact.
Here's the direct quote from the article.
At age 15, Baker left school to become a monk with the Brothers of Ploermel on the island of Jersey. Six years later, he abandoned the monastic life and performed his National Service in the Royal Army Medical Corps., where he became interested in acting.
Now, I don't know about the rest of you, but the image of Tom Baker in a brown monks' gown wandering around a garden saying "Peace to you, brother." in that low voice of his... I'm not sure I can stomach it and keep a straight face.

I can confirm that, and I agree; very hard to be putting a mental picture to without the giggles creeping up.

Seems perfectly sensible to me, and I can picture it easily. I would guess that the gravity and solemnity of it appealed to young and therefore more earnest Tom, who also was probably more prone to extremes from an early age, than most people would be. Actors are dramatic...?

I stumbled across his biography online once and read a bit. So that's how I can tell you that the monk thing is truthy truth. It was all very interesting, though I got the strong impression that Tom should probably be on medication of some sort.
Might have been the bit where he tries to kill his mother in law with a brick...
Or how he kept going on about death and dead things...
but, that might just be his sense of humour O.o
And then I had to stop reading because he started on about *doing* *things* backstage at conventions, and I just REALLY didn't want to think about that.
So, um, yeah. Tom Baker. He was once a monk. And in some pictures he doesn't have eyebrows...

Okay, my guess is that Tom took up the religious life because it was absolutely crucial that he always stay very close to a confession booth.

Tom, Tom...I love his voice and his curls and his teeth, but the more I learn about his personal life, the more frightened I become.

I've decided that I don't care about his personal life, don't want to know any more about his personal life (I mean really, it's *his* life, not mine) and um... all I need know is teeth and curls and magical scarves and The Voice

I find the whole thing rather amusing, actually. The poor bloke wandering around, talking to trees... eating bread and drinking wine... the poor man. The poor twisted man. ...course, I'm not one to talk. I sometimes wander around and talk to trees myself... if they give off the impression of being lonely. Sometimes all a poor little conifer needs is a good listening-to. In fact, not ony that, but they generally appreciate a little background music too. Why.. one particularly attractive blue spruce I once had the pleasure of conversing with told me of his early fondness of Mozart, and how captivating he found his innerlying melodic messages to be. Soon after we found ourselves immersed in deep philosophies of man relating to the pleasures of music and how it affects the aura of mankind... and sprucekind as well, I imagine. I say "sprucekind" very distincively because other trees, the white pines and cedars in particular, aren't all that drawn to the classical music, but are in fact very partial to smooth jazz... although that's not always the case with ALL cedars and white pines. Why, once I met a cedar who was rather deeply involved with modern country-western. I haven't the foggiest idea why, but I tink it had something to do with the fact that he was dating a poplar who's mother had married an old oak that was into that sort of music. Of course, that's just an assumption. I can't say for sure... ...*looks around* ...anyway... Haven't we all tried that? Could be. You never really know what sort of takes on life you'll aquire wilst talking to trees, you know.
