Interview hereNothing much spoilerific, just Capaldi discussing his upcoming role. What excites me the most is how seriously he's taking this and how, in turn, how seriously the world (or at least the interviewer) is taking him. The major 'spoiler', if you will, is that there will be no romantic relationship between Twelve and Clara. Apparently Capaldi had to push for this. While I am happy about this I fear it's for the wrong reasons. Doctor/companion shouldn't happen because suddenly he's older, but because Doctor/human will never work, both realistically and stylistically. All in all, even more excited for series 8! I worry a bit about his health. His hair has become noticeably greyer.

I think being cast as the Doctor is a bit like being a football manger or indeed President or Prime Minister - it takes it out of you, very quickly, and I think that's in large part due to the stress caused by the sudden exposure and publicity.
I also reflect again on the fact that even though it hasn't always been liked or respected much by the mainstream press, Doctor Who always seems to be big news, certainly in the UK. Even when it was at its lowest ebb in the mid-80s, the show's various travails were still making the front pages of the tabloids. I guess that's when you know something is a genuine cultural touchstone as opposed to just pop culture ephemera.

Agree completely about Doctor/human (including if that human has a tiny bit of Time Lord DNA),starpanda!
