Er, I thought we might need a thread for more-or-less serious discussion/news concerning the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who in 2013. I know we already have the cracky speculation thread, but still... Anyway, here's a bit of news (the first concrete news I think) about at least part of the BBC's plans for next year: www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2012/aug/09/mark-gatiss-drama-creation-doctor-whoThoughts?

He has, of course, already had one bite at that particular cherry with The Pitch of Fear. ;D

What's The Pitch of Fear?

In the end I feel I'll probably always prefer the cracky speculation thread, alas. Also, on a completely unrelated note, does anyone know why there is all this space after my post before my signature? I see that other people have it too, but then some don't like Mag's post. OK, I have just filled it with this extra text, but basically before it was this much space with just that first sentence.

Heh, Aqua, was about to ask what some people didn't like about my post, but then I realised what you meant. ;D

What's The Pitch of Fear? A sketch about the origins of the show, with Mark Gatiss and David Walliams. It was originally shown as part of the 1999 Doctor Who Night on BBC2, and later included as a DVD extra on The Beginning boxset.

Maybe I should. Anyway, I definitely think this com should do something special for the anniversary, like a ficathon (including art, fanmixes etc).

I can't honestly imagine that this version will be more entertaining than that one... ;D Anyway, I definitely think this com should do something special for the anniversary, like a ficathon (including art, fanmixes etc). I've been thinking along those lines too. Obviously plans will have to be worked out in more detail nearer the time, but I think that would be a good thing to do. Maybe I lack enough excitement in my life or something, but for some reason I'm feeling pretty invested at the moment in the notion that this anniversary needs to be marked with a bang rather than a whimper...

"Word" is that Stephen Moffat has confirmed on some radio talk show that there will definitely be a special episode screened on the 50th anniversary itself, 23 November 2013, which coincidentally enough is a Saturday. Of course, that's the sort of "confirmation" that can easily be weaselled out of afterwards, but right now I'm going to assume it's true until I hear differently.
Just thought - also the 50th anniversary of JFK's assassination (Nov 22) - I imagine there's going to be a fair bit of media coverage of that as well (almost certainly more than Who will get anywhere outside of the UK, and probably here too, to be honest).

This is quite an exciting prospect for those of you who dig Big Finish audios (news brought to my attention by a Livejournal associate): www.bigfinish.com/news/v/doctor-who-50th-anniversary-release-announcedAnd just thinking, apart from IMF's admirable initiative which we will not discuss in the non-member-viewable threads has anybody got any other ideas about how we could mark the 50th anniversary on the forum? I know we're not as thick on the ground as we used to be, but I'm sure collectively we could do something that we could look back on fondly in later life... ;D

A (probably underwhelming) idea from me:
How about doing more thingy vs. thingy, only expanding on it by coming up with as many versions as possible, such as Story vs. Story, where we could do them by Doctor or by season, First/Last Appearance vs. First/Last Appearance (done with Doctors and companions, creatures etc)?

We should do a pole of who has the best/worst death or something.
Or better yet, we should do a writing prompt thread where we each try to write a few lines describing the events leading to a regeneration in the most comical or unlikely way possible, or in they style of something else, like commentating a game or an infomercial or something.

I like all of those ideas - we definitely ought to do some anniversary-themed Thingy vs Thingies when the current one is over. And yes, maybe put some polls up and let them run for the rest of the year... And some writing prompts/games sound like a good idea as well. Let me think about it. Of course, if anybody just wants to jump in and do something on their own initiative, then go for it, I say.

BIG - although perhaps not wholly surprising - 50th Anniversary news - do NOT click the link if you are at all spoiler-phobic: www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21980892Thoughts: * Well, if any of the previous Doctors were going to show up, it was going to be him. Let's hope he and Rose aren't as annoying as they were in S2. And, well...if Tennant and Piper are in, despite the strenuous denials, who else is? And can we believe any of those other strenuous denials?* In other news (also mucho spoilery if you go reading the comments and/or the other links on the page): doctorwhotv.co.uk/first-50th-anniversary-casting-46722.htmFurther, possibly mischievous, thought: * Do you know what, if you stuck a Beatles wig on him, that Ken Bones wouldn't half look like Patrick Troughton, wouldn't he?* Hmm...
