As Maggs points out bellow, this previously contained potential spoilers. (Still does, but now they're whited out. ;P ) Cumberbatch as the Master? Yes, it's been bandied about, but depending on the credibility of this article (and the source that referred me to it, lends me to believe that it's reasonable at least) it may actually be close to happening! ^^Here's the article I'm talking about: www.contactmusic.com/news/benedict-cumberbatch-joins-doctor-who-for-50th-anniversary_1297918

I hope not. I'm a bit tired of him.
ETA: Also, this is a potential spoiler, so it should probably not be in the thread title and should be whited out.

Hahahaha I think Mags has a secret hatred for Mr. Cumberbatch.
I did not read the article but I kind of hope he doesn't. Silly boy is taking on more than he can chew and he will regret this soon.

The person who linked me to it in her Journal on DA was gushing rather hillariously about who he's apparnetly the most gorgous man ever to walk this earth or something, and then about how Matt Smith was the most adorable person ever. They're normally fairly level headed, aside from being a bit on the squeeing fan side for Sherlock and DW. It seems that the potential combination of the two blew a fuse somewhere...
Honestly I kind of agree Newton. As cool as it could be in theory, I'm not sure I really want to go there. Besides, it would mean we could never really have a proper DW X Sherlock crossover. A Study in Time, all the way! ^^ (for those who have seen that video).

Wait... Cumberbatch is in the Hobbit? I thought that was his co-star? I think this article may have its facts slightly muddled... (either that or I do)
Is he in Star Trek though? Not that I'm complaining, since more Cumberbatch is always a good thing in my opinion, but man oh man, he'd best be guarding against burnout since that's like five feature films and a starring TV role in a year. Does he sleep or what?
All that said, I don't think this comes as a surprise to anyone. Mind, he has been quoted as saying that he wouldn't touch Who with a ten foot pole since it has a tendency to... stick in a type-casty way... more than most anything else, but he's got so many other roles under his belt by this point that might not be a concern any more.
For the fiftieth they've got to do something special. Everyone expects Tennant to show up (frankly, I'll be astonished if he doesn't), we know Ecclestone won't be (unless they make a wax model ala the Five Doctors... which I would like to see actually, for the lulz)... If they've got a relatively big name, big screen star willing to come on and boost the ratings. Yeah.. cynical me, but I can see this happening. And the fans go wild.
I just hope that the writing and the plot is of the same quality of the actors

Not ''hatred''. I just get tired of seeing the same people in everything.

I don't think he sleeps. HE has been filming like 5 different things since like the summer time AND he was doing stage production all through spring 2o11. He needs to stop, he is starting to age and not int he good way.
.... I know more than I would like.
Yes he is the hobbit. Minor role I think. Yes he is in Star Trek. There are pictures of him being all bad ass. Spoilers though.

I think - does this count as a spoiler? - he is the voice of Smaug the Magnificent, the dragon in The Hobbit. Which is a film I'm in two minds about tbh - I think I'm one of those fanatical "must not change the written word AT ALL!" type fans when it comes to Tolkien, or at least to Peter Jackson's versions of same. Imho, the Fellowship of the Ring and the second half of The Return of the King are great, movie-wise, but the bits in between...nah. Some of the things I hear about The Hobbit film do not inspire confidence in me. Especially not the Dwarves, who look like reject Klingons in the publicity pictures.
However...! It does have Sylvester McCoy in it, so it's probably worth seeing just for that. ;D
Re Cumberthingy, I don't think it's his fault that he's getting a lot of work and publicity of late thanks to his starring in Sherlock, which like it and Moffat or not, has been a pretty huge success, both in terms of ratings and with the chattering classes. You know, in a profession as fickle and lacking in security as acting, he's probably thinking strike while the iron is hot and he's probably right. In 20 years time it could be "Benedict who??!" for all he knows now.
He does seem to be in everything lately though... ;D
As a point of interest, Maggadin - how many things have you actually seen him in? Because when I actually thought about it just now, I realised that while I've seen him in adverts for lots of things lately, the only things I can recall actually watching him in are Sherlock and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. So my sense of his ubiquity, as it were, may be exaggerated... Interesting thought, anyway.
Regarding his rumoured role in Who - if it turns out to be true - I think he'd been good in it, you know. And I think he'd make a good Master. Unlike a lot of actors of his generation, Cumberbatch seems to be a genuine character actor - in the two roles I mention above he really could not be more different, and I've seen him in some comedy film with a young James McAvoy a few years ago where you wouldn't even have recognised him. So, you know, I doubt he'd just be playing the Master as Sherlock or anhything. I think unlike a lot of the guest stars NuWho attracts he'd add something beyond amusement/recognition value.*

I confess to not actually have read that whole article, having received a synopsis of the DW related parts from the aforementioned fan.
I've seen fan art for a while of John as the Hobbit and Sherlock as a Dragon, but having not actually read The Hobbit or payed much attention, I had no idea that was more than wishful thinking on the part of the fan-artists. ^^
No, he really doesn't sleep apparently.
I really hope the Eccles is in the special. If they do do the wax model thing tough, it would be hilarious if they like find it in the back of Rose's room closet or something, and she picked it up from a room of junk somewhere in the TARDIS. Like Nine got it as a thank you gift for saving Madame Tussaud or something. XD Then there's a legitimate excuse for it to be hanging around in the background of scenes.
I also really hope they call McGann back in. He's got a spiffy new costume and a screwdriver and everything!

Not apart from a clip of Sherlock, I think. I'm sure he's talented and everything. I've just lost interest in him before it even started. In any case, I fear they'd just make him an evil version of Eleven, just like they made Simm!Master an evil version of TenI would forgo the 50th anniversary if it meant not seeing You Know Who 1 and You Know Who 2 again (No, not Lord Voldemort). Yes, I am that bad.

Aqua, that is how they must do it - I will not accept it if Moffat and co do not in fact do this now that you've had the idea. ;D Maggadin, my old Nan would call that cutting your nose off to spite your face. Which...is a pretty horrible image, really. My apologies.

But... but just imagine if the 50th anniversary turned into a 45-minute long Doctor/River fest. D: Wouldn't you sacrifice anything to prevent that from happening??? But I suppose if Eleven is still the Doctor in 2013, he'll be appearing with whichever companion is the current? If that were the case, and they'd use Martha or Donna instead of Rose then I MIGHT be into it.
I kid. Maybe.
But, yeah, I don't really care about Cumberbatch one way or the other, aside from finding the constant appearance of his name annoying. Hey, I think I've found the perfect name for his fans: Cumberbatch Dolls! ;D

I would very sincerely hope that any 50th anniversary story didn't go down that particular route, Maggadin. I would also hope that if and when Eleven gets new companion(s), she/he/they get room to breathe and get a bit of limelight without certain recurring character(s) popping up all the while. But that's a separate issue. Personally, though, I'm going to be front and centre staring at my TV so that in later years I can regale young upstarts who don't even remember the 2005 series with tales of how I was there, at the 50th anniversary...and it was rubbish! ;D I personally think he should have changed his name from Benedict Cumberbatch to something like Max Power or Trent Steel or something. You know, a name with purpose. A name with punch! ;D

Well, we also sincerely hoped they wouldn't go down the She's Literally His Wife path... I think I just find Moffat a lot more predictable than most people. Not saying I'm more clever or observant than anyone else (I'm, if anything, more stupid and oblivious). Just maybe a bit more of a wanky killjoy. I will be glued as well... IF they don't include said characters/s. I think Bendedict Cumberbatch is a good name. I just want to be spiteful of everyone who's more successful than me

I'd like to point out that as I recall from reading his Wikipedia page, Benedict's father was also an actor and actually changed his name TO Cumberbatch, from something shorter. As names go, frankly it's a mouthful.

If so than that's like me going on about Vince Corazza and how he is in everything every since he was Texdo Mask on Sailormoon. (The man does A LOT of voice work and is in a lot of children cartoons. He also does a lot voice for ads. He will ALWAYS be Texdo Mask to me gosh i wish my right hand bracket button would work.

As names go, frankly it's a mouthful. I changed my shortlast name to a very long one that North Americans can not seem to comprehend. I am always surprised when somebody finds a new way to write my last name.
