Last episode of the year. What do you think?
I thought it was boreing .... then again I had to stop it a lot for the Ghana game, G20 protests and my mother. It has been a crazy day.
I hated : When the Doctor Arrived at Rorys and Ams weeding and Amy is jumping the Doctor, telling him to kiss the bride and such. That is so disreapctful towards Rory and if the Doctor isn't careful, she is going sexual assult him. I am so sorry, but Amy does not love Rory... she is abusive towards a man who protected her for 2000 years. Rory, GTFO of that realtionship ASAP. You and Doctor should travel the world together, leave Amy behind.
URGGGG THIS WHY I HAVE NOT BEEN ENJOYING THIS SEASON!!! SHE IS A GROSS HUMAN BEING AND I DON'T SEE WHY MOFFAT IS MAKING HER A SAINT!!!**

My thoughts.
** I think the finale was whimsical and wonderful. Are there plot holes you could drive a truck through? Yes. I don't care. The Doctor's speech about the tale of an old man who stole a magic box and ran away is worth the price of admission. His continued quest to figure out what his relationship is with River is fun. The fact that Amy and Rory choose to travel with him shows that it is okay to grow up, but still hang on to your sense of adventure and wonder. Can it be Christmas now? **

Thoughts: * I think I was in broad agreement with you, LL. Let's be clear - this was not the clever, twisty timey-wimey of the whole of S5 to date that I was expecting going in (although the whole sequence with fez!Doctor and his mop ("I wear a fez now; fezzes are cool.") and sticking the sonic in Amy's top pocket as an afterthought, was brilliant in a quiet sort of way). Nevertheless, and maybe it's the sheer amount of fanboyish goodwill I hold towards Eleven and S5 (the Moff and the boy Smith have yet to betray me as badly as Journey's End or End of Time did! ;D), but when Amy was doing the "something old..something new..." bit, I was mouthing the words along with her and going YAY, YAY - IT'S THE DOCTOR!!! And then when he showed up in bizarre Edwardian evening wear...well, I'll be honest, I squeed a little... ;D
AND...even if the Moff didn't feel obliged to answer all of those questions fandom has been asking all season, he leaves them open for next time... So what exactly is the deal with River?? Whose voice was saying "silence will fall" Wait and see, seems to be the answer... Yes, our first multi-season arc!!
Suffice to say, I cannot wait until Xmas!! ;D* The one thing it was not was boring... ;D

Though Moffat did not quite astound me as much as I expected, I have enjoyed this season a lot. **River, as usual, annoyed me but i did like the ending with River and the Doctor where I was thinking "No. No. Please, no. If you do this I will hate you for all of time, Moffat." and then the quick turn of dialouge and I felt happy again, a little bothered but not screaming in agony inwardly (possibly outwardly too if it had gone the way things seemed for a minute or so).
Rory/Amy suqee! I loved the wedding at the end. XD Mr. Pond. I am just so happy that they finally got married but decided to go with the Doctor any way. There hasn't been a good companion/companion ship since Troughton with Jamie and Victoria! And you can't forget Polly/Ben and Ian/Barbara.
I honestly was getting tired of companions leaving after only one season and am so happy to see both Rory and Amy staying along (and not River!)
If this were a single movie or it were scedualed to be the end of the series all together would have believed the Doctor to be gone. It was REALLY convincing and I was completely lost as to how he would return. I'm still lost on how he returned because it didn't make sense. o.O But still! My ships still stand! Amy/Rory, Doctor/TARDIS.

Okay, I FINALLY figured out what bothered me so much, and it's sad. It's the great big blow ourselves up button. In SPITE of that I LOVED this episode. SO. so much. the disappearing reappearing people. FIRST there are NO people only statues that are "afterimages" when Rory starts waiting, then the people come back (afterall gotta get weeAmeilia to the museum intime, ya?) then they disappear again (thank god, really, that little girl is a godawful actress mean but true) just in time for Amy Rory n the Doc to be all alone in the universe again aside from River who is stuck in weird loopy thing) That really is saddening to me so if any of you can make it not a mistake that would rock (hee hee like in Marvel you'll get a Noprize) Aside fromt hat this episode was great, though I was REALLY worried he was going to kiss River at the end (and I like her and he it just makes me a squeamish when the Doctor gets all kissyfaceDoctor) but I LOVED when he was all the sudden in the loop. Cmooooooon it was done really well and it honestly gave me shivers the first time (yeah so I have watched a coupla times already lol).
I think it would have felt more dangerous had they taken the time to point out he was only breaking the rules as time was dead and the rules really failed to matter by that point. As it was it really felt as if there was no real danger since he was running about slaphappy with a fez and a mop. ALTHOUGH that REALLY enabled the holygodDEADDOCTOR to have a LOT of impact (and not just the poor stuntman's impacting the bottom of the stairs) I'm excited about the multi-series arc and companions and YAY Rory stays!!!!!!!! I LOVE LOVELOVELOVE Rory!
And bowties, cuz bowties are COOL.
Yeah, so I really enjoyed this episode but really felt like it was expecting me to just not think sometimes and that disappointed me
Oooh, JJ, wasn't the first mention of Saxon in Love and Monsters? So second multi-series arc, kinda. but all in all I was quite happy.

*And come to think of it, I think the first mention of Torchwood was in Bad Wolf, right back in S1, so...yeah... But the thing is, S5 just seems to do it better. And I think that's the thing: there was, as you point out, still a lot of handwaving and stuff that didn't quite make sense, just as you'd expect in an RTD season finale, but here, for some reason, it just seemed better done and to make more sense, to the extent that you were prepared to forgive it that. I was anyway.
I make no bones about it; I loved this story to bits. It gave me a really positive, happy sort of feeling about Doctor Who and where it's going, much more than any of the Ten finales did, that's for sure.
But you're right about the handwaving - this wasn't as clever or twistily-plotted as I was expecting. It was entirely devoted to resolving the cliffhanger rather than answering the big questions, which are carried over to S6. But I think that was probably a better approach than trying to cram everything in and rushing it. I guess whether you find all of the timey-wimey hopping about with the fez and everything to be clever and amusing or a bit of an annoying cheat is down to the individual - I thought it was great, but I'm easily impressed with that sort of thing! ;D
My take on the disappearing people? Right, here goes: When the TARDIS blew up, the universe collapsed around it and the Pandorica. So Earth, where they were both situated, was the last place to go. So, we had a situation were Earth was the last place left in the universe and the rest of the universe not only was destroyed but had never existed... So the Daleks and their buddies became statue-like "afterimages" because the parts of the universe they had originated in no longer existed, so they didn't either. Meanwhile, Earth, at the very centre of the collapsing universe, continued to exist with people on it, but the black skies etc because there was nothing else out there. Which is why Wee Amelia and her aunt etc were still there to go to the museum. Now the reason there was no-one around when the Doctor came on the scene was that the museum was closed, Wee Amelia having hidden until after hours. Then, of course, Earth started to be consumed too, and things started to disappear just like they did with the cracks etc.
I don't know if that really answers your question, but it's my best effort. ;D
But yeah, I do think the audience were being asked not to think too hard about some aspects of it, but I think the general pace and character stuff and drama and humour were all so goo that you almost didn't notice it. I didn't, anyway. I am, if nothing else, easily impressed. So yeah:
"Something blue!!!" etc etc.
Still, I really really loved this. Matt Smith is like some sort of demi-god for me right now, his dorkiness at Glastonbury notwithstanding! ;D*

And then there's the whole plot with Dalek Caan, which, if you think about it, started way back in Army of Ghosts/Doomsday, went through the awful New York episodes (sorry Merry), and then finished with
RELEASE THE REALITY BOMB!!!
and
I FLlllllleeeeeeeeeewwww!!!
The Moff is not the first one to bring multi-season arcs to the show. Heck, Seven's entire era is one big arc, they even have a name for it. It didn't get finished though. I hope Eleven's does.
If only because I want to see what alarming wardrobe accessory he starts dotting on next. *bless*
..
I haven't written a proper reaction post to this episode yet and probably never will, because the majority of my opinion on it can be summed up by shouting: ROoooooorrrry!!! Feeezzzz!! Rooorrrrryyyy!!! SOMETHING BLUE!!!! Tophaaaattt!!!

I concur. Muchly. In spite of that nagging feeling it gives me I LOVED this too (I didn't really seem to get that across in my other post). Aww, Clocket, they aren't awful they are fun and i STILL love all the juxtaposition and tongue-in-cheekness of them! and hee hee hee reality bomb, as much as it makes me giggle it's cause I love this, so silly! OOOOH I just thought of something** So since the TARDIS doesn't like to travel between universes can Amy, Rory and the Doctor still travel back in time? Is there a time to go back to since that universe is at year zero? Or since the explosion was in every time and every when does that mean every year is somehow year zero?**

*Tophaaaaatss!!!!
Okay, so it's probably more accurate to say that this is the first multi-season arc where the writer/producer felt the need to go: "Look - multi-season arc! Aren't I awesome?" ;D
My take on it is that the "rebooted" universe is exactly the same as the previous existing Whoniverse...except when it's convenient for Moffat that it not be. You know, I don't really believe any of the conspiracy theories about him megalomaniacally wanting to rewrite Who continuity or anything (I think things like Amy not remembering Journey's End or The Next Doctor never having happened were just the effect of the cracks - more's the pity! ;D), but he is on record as being in the "there is no canon" camp. So, it's his equivalent of "The Time War did it", which I think RTD cheekily used in interviews and stuff but never actually stated in-story as Moffat has here.
Actually, Journey's End did have one good thing about it:
DETONATE THE REALITY BOMB!!!!!!
Oh Davros, don't go changing ever... ;D*
