Argh. I wish it wasn't called the crack. I wish it was the anomaly, or something, The Crack is just too easy to make bad puns about, but anyway...
I realized something when I was watching the last episode. It made me sad. But then I realized something else at work today and I think I've got a new theory on the finale...
*spoilers for everything*
Rory was consumed by the crack at the end of Cold Blood, wiped from existence. Yet, rumour is that he comes back in the finale, but that he doesn't remember who he is either. The idea being that the crack doesn't kill you; it just steals your identity. A death of a sort. Like what happened to Donna. *sobs*
River killed the best man she's ever known. It's been widely speculated that this is the Doctor. Except, it can't be the Doctor because Matty boy has signed on for two more seasons. Unless she's talking about another death of a sort.
She told him that she learned to pilot the TARDIS from the best and it was a shame he wasn't there.
I think it was Merry who first brought up the idea that the Moff might try to blank slate the Whoniverse by retconning everything pre-2010. I was sceptical at first, but then, in the last episode, we got to see two more pictures of the Doctors previous incarnations.
Why do they keep showing us these pictures? At first I thought it was pure flailing fanwankery (and, make no mistake, I will not stop my flailing if it happens again) but now I wonder if the Moff isn't intentionally reminding us of the history of the show and the main character, so that we will really feel and understand the blow when time rips all of that away.
Not to worry though, because, after mulling this over at work today, I don't think it will be permanent. Time can be rewritten, but what was it River said before she offed herself in the library? She said that it wouldn't be rewritten. Not that time. I don't know if the Moff knew he'd be getting the captain's seat for the series when he wrote the library episodes (but I figure he must've had a pretty good inkling.) I don't know how much he planned out. What I do know is that at some point the Doctor will remember what happened in the Library and give her his old sonic screwdriver.
I think that he will regain his memories and his past. Probably Rory will too. Though, it would be nice, for a change, to have a season or two where the Doctor isn't an old man weighed down by guilt and self-loathing. Give him a chance to duke it out with his subconscious and win (and why do I get the impression the Dream Lord is probably going to turn up at some point as well?!?)
Anyway, I'm just thinking, the Moff could be taking a page from the EDAs and having an amnesia season. The other thing that makes me wonder about this is the bit where River knows his name and Ten says that's impossible...
because the other thing I thought of today at work is this: The Doctor doesn't reveal his name... unless he's forgotten that he's not supposed to reveal it.
Um, yeah, my crack theories are cracky. Get it? CRACKY?
Like I said. Awful. LOL
Other random bits that aren't connected to this but I just feel like mussing over (and have been mentioned by me and other people before, but why not gather them all together for the heck of it):
* the reoccurring theme of vision/blindness
* the countdowns and deadlines that keep happening. I know there are always countdowns in Who, but it seems like Eleven is constantly saying "Just X more minutes until..." and then Amy WAS flat-out counting down in Flesh and Stone. what happens when the time runs out?
* What is the silence?
* I think Amy is going to have to make a choice between Rory and the Doctor again.
* I think that Rory and his issued in 1990 security badge is more than what he appears to be.
* I think that the Village that Time Forgot is more than it appears to be.
* I want to know what the fairytale is.
* I want to know how the Other!Doctor ties in with any/all of this.
* I think that this finale is probably going to have nothing to do with anything I'm talking about, will come completely out of left field, and will still blow my socks off.
