Once more unto the breach of... well, ensuring that all companions have their own thread.
And Vicki!
I think I said too much about her on the Susan thread. You know, DWM when it reviewed the video release of TheRescue/The Romans listed Vicki as a con. What? I had serious doubts tha the reviewer watched the same episodes as me.
It's a long time till the Doctor gets a companion whose thirst for adventure and exploration very nearly equals his own - maybe not till Ace or Charley? Vicki thinks Ian and Barbara are old and boring at times - but not the Doctor! He's different. They're literally partners in crime more than once, especially The Romans.
You wouldn't trust One and Vicki to roam time and space without someone to make sure they don't get up to too much mischief. Her random decisions to administer justice are almost as bad as the Doctor's. Her near-poisoning of Nero is priceless.
And her abandoned, wary teenager in The Rescue, accusing Barbara of being a murderer and telling her she must be several hundred years old. (Poor Barbara, "Well, I suppose I am," she says and gets upset.)
And I've only seen three of her stories still. I think possibly because, despite having seen The Time Meddler a long time ago, there was some sort of accepted wisdom going about that Vicki was a mere inferior Susan-substitute. Actually getting to watch her episodes was then a bit of a revelation and I loved her instantly.
Maureen O'Brien may not care to talk about the past, but she brightened up the b&W era. And never got anything like as hysterical as poor Susan.
I like her educating Steven in The Time Meddler, too, as he refuses to accept they're back in time for half the story.
