I really want to start volunteering. I would like to know how people have got into their work/placement. Any tips to get my foot into the door? What type of volunteering do you do?
Thank you. Newton

I'm secretary of the ANTHRO society at my university... but I'm not so sure that's volunteering since I get free beer out of it...
I got in by following a sign to a meeting. And pizza.

I volunteer for a professional organization of which I am a member. I just told someone that I wanted to get involved and the next thing I knew I was on major committees. Organizations with minimal budgets love members who volunteer. I am also a volunteer translator for my local library. Other volunteering I do has usually come from friends asking me to help with one of their projects. My suggestion would be to find something that you are already interested in/good at and ask people what help they need. There isn't a non-profit anywhere that doesn't need help with something.

I'm secretary of the ANTHRO society at my university... but I'm not so sure that's volunteering since I get free beer out of it... I got in by following a sign to a meeting. And pizza. In grade nine, I was wondering around my school, kind of lost, I walked into a room and there were a couple of kids and a teacher. the teacher jumped up and asked if I was here to do teach crew, I was like "uhh *looks around at the little number of students and desperate teacher* sure!" seeing that I had some what heard about the meeting I thought that sounded interested I joined. Good times tech crew was and I miss it. I volunteer for a professional organization of which I am a member. I just told someone that I wanted to get involved and the next thing I knew I was on major committees. Organizations with minimal budgets love members who volunteer. My suggestion would be to find something that you are already interested in/good at and ask people what help they need. There isn't a non-profit anywhere that doesn't need help with something. The two places I really want to volunteer for is Doctors without Boarders and Sick Kids, both are full with volunteers. They would both be great for me. I am going to just look around some more and hound the two groups above. Yeah, I doubled post and I don't care.

I really want to volunteer at the local Humane Society but it's off the bus route and I don't have a car.

I really want to volunteer at the local Humane Society but it's off the bus route and I don't have a car. I have thought about that, I would work with the rats. However, they have been in trouble lately and things are a little stinky right now.

I have thought about volunteering there, but I know I would end up being the crazy cat and dog lady of my neighborhood. Every time one of the ones that I liked (which would be many) was going to be euthanized I would want to take it home.

Is there a school near you? I volunteer at the Maritime Museum, which is downtown, and my high school. That's easy (but then I live 7 minutes from it). And next school year I won't be volunteering, I'll be working, but hey, what can you do?
