Newton's wish for new posts outside of BotC is my command, so I decided to start a new post . I'm restricting it to 1 Doctor, just so anyone who hasn't seen that Doctor and wants to avoid any possible spoilers in the discussion can do so.
If you were on the proverbial deserted island and could only have one episode starring William Hartnell, which would you choose, and why?
I personally haven't seen all of his episodes yet, but based on what I have seen I would choose "The Aztecs." I like the sets and costumes (imagine if it was in color!), and the fact that Barbara's knowledge of the Aztecs helps the team survive. I also think the relationship between the Doctor and Cameca is very sweet, and I love that at the end he keeps the stone that she gave him.

I just wanted to say that this is a great idea. I thank you for answering my wish! I huggle you (or maybe not since I am all sweaty right now).
I have only seen Un Earthly Child so I can not answer you.

That's a hard toss-up between the Romans and the Chase. I love both of them for the exquisite Ian/Barbara shippiness. The Romans has a sword fight and Ian in a toga, but the Chase has Steven, his panda, and Frankenstein attacking a Dalek... but the Romans has Ian in a toga! You see my dilemma. Actually, if I could have one episode, ANY episode, my vote would probably be cast for a magically restored version of Marco Polo. That episode, in script format, was ny first actual experience with Classic Who, and it's a great story. The fact that I will never see it makes me sad.

I watched the recon of that episode a few days ago and it was a fantastic story. Based on the photos the sets and costumes were fabulous, and the script was just so good.

Agreed on the remarks re Marco Polo - a real lost gem, I think.
A One story I've always really liked is the Time Meddler; it combines the spirit of the historicals that you used to get in early Who with a nice alternative-history plot and the Meddling Monk, played by sometime Carry On film actor Peter Butterworth, makes a great comic villain. And comedy Vikings, as well; what's not to love about that?

I got Marco Polo on audio years ago and still have not listened to it.

Hmmm, One has a lot of good episodes. The Romans, The Chase, The Time Meddler, and The Space Museum are probably the best, though. Oh, and Planet of Giants. And I refuse to narrow it down to one; if I was really stuck with only one, any of them would do.

I also really like the unaired pilot version of Unearthly Child, more for the might-have-been it represents than anything; a much more alien, unfriendly version of the Doctor (yes, even more unfriendly than One was at the very beginning) that suggests that Hartnell's old-man-shtick was a more calculated bit of acting than people often assume (I mean see him in some of the other things he was in, playing everything from stern-but-fair soldiers to lowlife gangsters for more corroboration of this). Whether the show would have prospered as it did had they gone with a slightly darker tone, I don't know, but it might have turned out differently.

The "darker Hartnell" in the pilot was legendary in fan circles. Our club parodied it by showing Hartnell pulling out a gun and shooting everyone dead at the tiniest of provocations. They were obnoxious but could be amusing.

They were obnoxious but could be amusing. It sounds it; sort of "grim and gritty Doctor"; I think that was sort of the idea they had with Six, but it didn't really come out right, or maybe they needed more time with him.

I think they took for granted that DW was here to stay in the 80s, and so felt free to take a big risk with Six, intending to "humanize" him over a long time, as if they thought they couldn't be cancelled. We see the later Six after the hiatus. The Colin/Peri relationship has matured by then.
When I finally saw the pilot, I wondered what the fuss was about. It was hard for me to see the difference.

Darn, how would I choose? Maybe something like Keys of Marinus or The Chase because they both have a delightful variety and good looong length to them. On the other hand, The Romans and The Time Meddlar are fine lighter pieces... Hrm!

What I like about those is that the story moves around. I like it when ther story isn't just... the Tardis arrives at the start, they get in trouble, save the planet, then they get back into the Tardis, which hasn't moved an inch for the whole story, at the end, and go. Jjpor... that's certainly right. I saw a hydrogen bomb go off once, and really, it wasn't bigger than a small firecracker. Just a mushroom cloud six inches tall in the middle of the street. There's a kid in the neighborhood who gets them cheap.

And One was wearing a tie...like an ordinary type tie...and...er...and...
I'm going to have to go and watch this one again to make sure I didn't just imagine it or something. (I do that, you know ;D)

I didn't even realize there was another version - learn something new all the time. Of course that endless variety (for better and for worse) is what we love about it, yes?

And One was wearing a tie...like an ordinary type tie...and...er...and... I'm going to have to go and watch this one again to make sure I didn't just imagine it or something. (I do that, you know ;D) And he laughs a really awsome, wicked laugh when Ian and Barbara can't get out of the TARDIS. Seriously, his eyes in that scene; completely wicked. Also, Susan is shown playing with Rorschach inkblots and is wearing a ''futuristic'' type vinyl shirt and says ''I was born in the 49th century'' (and One says something like ''Susan and I are not of this world''). It also doesn't have the bit with the painting that the Doctor brings for Susan, which showed his softer, whimsical side. ETA: And I almost forgot: ''Have you ever wondered what it's like to be wanderers of the Fourth Dimension? To be exiles?'' Awesome.

Glad to know I wasn't just imagining it. Mind you, I have imagined some fairly awesome things in Who stories I have seen and then when I saw them again a bit later was disappointed to discover they weren't quite how I remembered them... ;D
