I'm relatively new to Doctor Who. I only got into it last year, and I've just realised what a wonderful show I've been missing out on. Having caught up with nearly every episode of series 1 to 4, David Tennant is wonderfully eccentric as the Doctor, and Matt Smith looks like a worthy sucessor to David's genius.
Having researched the show's history, I'd very much like to start getting into some classic Doctor Who from the first seven doctors. However, there are so many different DVDs and episodes available, I haven't a clue where to start. (I've only seen one post pre 1996 episode - Remembrance of the Daleks - and I thought it was a very good story, ignoring the wobbly Daleks.)

Hello! I'm new to Doctor Who and to this site as well. Yay! I can't say much on the best place to start for Classic Who. I just started at the very beginning, which I guess is a great place to start. hehe Anyway, welcome! This place so far is fantastic and full of lovely Who fans.

Hello! I'm Clocket; Nine was my first and then through the miracle that is the internet I fell in love with all the others. *shifty eyes* if you want magic links and viewing suggestions from a somewhat obsessive fan who got herself into the Classic series via the New series just fire off a pm in my general direction. Anyway; welcome to the forum! It's a wonderfully crazy place this; full of friendly people and lots of good natured nerding. Feel free to explore (and post on) any old or new threads that catch your interest. Also: Love the Name! Ding!

Newton... how come you're in the same location as me?
timeywimeyding... I'm relatively old to Doctor Who, but consider that an accident of time please. I don't know if it's a good thing to reccommend what I consider to be prime-time Who, the Philip Hinchcliffe-Robert Holmes period... not everyone agrees, and once you've seen the best you have less to look forward to... Oh well, I tend to overthink things.
Talons of Weng Chiang roped me into Doctor Who for my entire lifetime, however long that in fact turns out to be. That speaks well for it.

Hello, timeywimeyding! I'm someone who got into the classic series after seeing the new series as well. I started at the beginning, which I think is a good place to start, but you can start anywhere, really.
I also have access to magical links I can give you if you're looking for classic Who. Found a huge untapped stash while looking for the Easter special the other day, in fact.

Welcome, timeywimeyding! I'm yet another of many who got into classic Who by enjoying the new series. Obviously, everyone's taste differs and the best way to figure out what you like is to try as much as you can, but my introduction was with City of Death, and I absolutely fell in love. I didn't really learn to enjoy the longer, more complex stories until later on. I would also say another good introduction is Spearhead from Space - first Three story, very little baggage from previous years, and some stuff that will be familiar to the new fans.

Also, Spearhead has Shower!Pertwee... but that's actually a bit distressing, even if you *like* Three... www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns0Vz7ow45sI blame his jaunty shower cap. ... rewatching that, I realise that there is visible Doctor!bum. Wasn't this episode filmed in 1969?! ... Er, um, sorry Timeywimey for hijacking your thread. Please don't be scared of Classic Who! Or Three! Both of which are fantastic, if a bit startling at times.

Well, hello there! Welcome to the boards and I hope you enjoy yourself here; they're certainly a very friendly, welcoming sort of crowd. It's always good to see people getting into oldschool Who via the new series, and always good to hear people giving Remembrance a bit of love. It's one of my favourites, mainly because I remember seeing it when it was actually shown on telly the first time (I was ten!) and thinking it was amazing. So, that dates me a bit; Seven will probably remain "my" Doctor forever, I suppose; all of the recommendations here are good ones, though. It is a little mind-blowing how good some of those Four stories are, actually, and Three certainly has his moments as well. Anyway, welcome!

Three grows on you, this may or may not be a healthy growth. Hey, Ding, welcome to the boards, as has been mentioned we're a great group if I must say so myself (and I don't have to ask anyone, we rock!). Personally, I think it's easier to get into Classic through a Doctor/era you can relate to. Like the seventies? eighties? hippies? army stories? Go from there, another way is fan-fiction, if you already feel like you know a certain Doctor the wobbliness of his special effects or ridiculousness of his rubber-mask aliens will seem a lovable, affable thing rather than an irritant. Anyway, wander about, we're happy to point you in any direction (be it right or wrong). You've a great lot of adventuring ahead of you, and I'm a bit jealous remembering those days of my own, enjoy it!

Saying too much on a public forum causes the links to magically disappear. I've sent a PM, though.

(I've only seen one post 1996 episode - Remembrance of the Daleks - and I thought it was a very good story, ignoring the wobbly Daleks.) Oh but that's the fun part of it! Horray for bad special effects and hallarious mistakes! It would be so much fun to act in a classic episode, everything is real with it. No CGI. Anywho, I'm Starflower, Prim's daughter. Glad to have you here. =) Classic is really amazing and you should definately watch them. If you are going to buy them, I would suggest the VHS tapes. They can even get as cheep as 3 to 5$ an episode! =) DVDs are nice with all the special fetures and really amazing quality, but they are tons more expensive.

Plus, it has the Special Weapons Dalek who, while he may be in need of a good wash, nevertheless has the biggest gun in Dalekdom... ;D

Actually there are plenty of non-CGI special effects where they're done later, and you can't see them on the set. Blue screen or green screen for one. The difference is that then they were manipulating images (on computer by that point I think) that had been filmed with real models etc., rather than creating the images from scratch by computer.

Thanks for all your support, guys.
I just bought the 'New Beginnings' DVD box set (The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis and Castrovalva) and they were all amazing. Fantastic story concepts, wonderful scenes with Tom and Peter, and an awesomely insane Master!
My favourite of the three stories was Logopolis. The idea of the universe being ruled by mathematicians was an interesting one, and the climax with the Doctor dangling from the edge of the Pharos dish was just epic. I still don't understand what the Watcher was for though. Can anyone who's seen the episode explain?

It was supposed to be a shadow-version of Fivey; like, a warning to Four that his end was near. I don't even pretend to understand it, but something similar happened to another random Time Lord during Three's era, so I guess there's precedent.
