I like all sorts of music. I do have a top three though.
Dance music. When ever I hear it I start tapping my feet. The music is great way to pump you up. It helps me get work done like dishes or doing an work out. I take pride in the fact that some of the best Dj's are from the Netherlands. I'm dutch, it's a law that everyone must like dance music.
I also love classical music. It claims me down and helps me get to work. I have loved that stuff since I was a baby. Did you know that babies who listen to classical music from age 0 - 3 do better in math than a kid who doesn't. Explain why I always liked math.
I Bollywood/Hindi pop music. Actually I like music from all over the world but those bollybeats are by far my favourite.
Close behind is 1930-50 music, big band, jazz etc. I had a time where I was all about the Rat Pack.
Then there is everything else. There is Rap, Blue Grass, Pop, Rock, etc. I know what it likes to hear someone say "everything" when you ask them which type of music they like. I roll my eyes too because they often don't.
I on the other hand tend to like music by song, not artist or type of music. Because I like music by the song, I have no music knowledge. I may like big band, but I do not artist who may have not been as well famous as others.
In the end, I LOVE LOVE LOVE music. I really don't care for movies like most people (people freak out when I haven't seen a movie that won an Oscar).
MUSIC!
... This took me way too long.

Beatles, ex-Beatles Elton John (especially less commercial stuff on albums) Steely Dan Neil Young REM Sheryl Crow Joni Mitchell Ryan Adams Don McLean early 70s soul Bob Dylan Who Cat Stevens Moody Blues Tindersticks Leonard Cohen Stevie Wonder
I lack a good way of catching up on newer stuff. I listen to newer stuff by those artists above, but while everyone else listens to music on computer now, I have a no-frills computer that I can't afford attachments for. My tastes aren't really as conventional as this list would seem to indicate.

Various things, though I usually fail to remember band/artist names. I know what I like, and I know it when I hear it. I like mid-nineties stuff (well, not the Spice Girls... urgh) and more and more I'm exploring songs from the 60s-70s-80s. And Classical, though, beyond Beethoven's dumDUmDEE-DUM! I know the names to nothing. My favourite band of all time is Great Big Sea. I've got a good portion of their songs memorized and I sing them inside my head while telemarketing/ riding the bus. it also mixes very well with Who: ca.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl6hrasp8wgca.youtube.com/watch?v=AtrdTpQOFeQ

*nods* I like folk music - I even (kinda sorta) play an autoharp.
My preferences run to anything that doesn't screech or squeal (no electric guitars or saxaphones, please!), light on percussion, melodic - and the best of all are those that tell a story of some kind. That said, I have soup-to-nuts in my collection, PDQ Bach, the Chad Mitchell Trio, John Denver, Bing Crosby, Michael Card, the Mamas and the Papas, Beecake...
