I'm going to get murdered by the hoard of ebil fan girls for this but...
Has anyone else noticed DTs constant use of that weird expression where he lifts his lip and scowls?? He uses it for pain, anger, sad, hate, confusion... and sometimes he just does it.
Does that expression seriousl tick off anyone else? Or am I just nuts, because I want to punch him everytime he uses it.

No, it bothers me as well. Thankfully most of our members are Classic!fans and not 'OMG, you must not insult Teh Almighty Tennant! 'Tis Blasphemy!' people.

here come the hoards... Thanks for the support guys. It's just I was having this conversation with my room mate the other day, and we both came to the conclusion that DTs smirk-thing was only effective once... and that was when he was playing Barty Crouch Jr.

I have never watched Harry Potter (and never will) so I'm afraid...I haven't seen him play that character. So can't really comment.

Urg, that movie is creepy and wrong on so many different levels...
but it does show what a good actor he is, or can be, I wish he'd stop relying on that stupid grimace and show more of his talent in DW

I haven't noticed the lip thing. But he does scratch him self a lot. He also messes with his hair too.

I saw Tennant in a 2005 live remake of a Quatermass story, where his acting is understated and believable.
My only description for DT as the Doctor is that he burbles like Hugh Laurie as Wooster or George in Blackadder. He really ought not to do that.

his acting in Human Nature/Family of blood was great. Actually, I was looking at picture of the episode with my roomie and she - based on the smirk - pin pointed the exact moment he became the Doctor again.
I bought Casanova off of Amazon last year and his acting is pretty decent in that too, though disturbingly alike to his DW style. That's just a scary movie. Funny as hell. But seriously emotionally scarring.

Yes, DT did just do the Doctor as he did his Casanova, and I could see that Casanova was done in the same RTD sort of style as RTD's Who. That got me thinking that DW is more the Russell Davies show than it is Doctor Who. It was great to see Peter O'Toole again, but depressing to think of how under-utilized he's been for decades. He's my favorite actor, I think.

I'm guessing I'm alone in my opinion, but I like DT's acting. I think he does a magnificant job in arrange of emtions and personalities. True at times he goes overboard, but when doing angry or sad he's just as good as CE any day. I see no difference and at least he's better than Tom Baker. Now there's a man who has no range in emotional appearance or character personality.

*gasp* Tis hersy! No, I'll admit that there are episodes when Tom is obvious drunk out of his mind and not doing any kind of acting... but he didn't really need to act, just stare at you with those big scary eyes. Most of the time I think he was just playing himself. But, seriously, he could act, and he could act very well in some episodes. (see Pyramids of Mars and Invasion of Time.) Four's always fun when he gets possessed/acts ebil. Pyramids especially has all sorts of subtle in it. Tennant, well, I've seen him act in Secret Smile (CREEPY!) so I know he has the talent, and in DW he's acting in a fake accent which probably makes everything twice as hard. And he CAN act. There are episodes where he DOES act. My complaint is that one, single annoying facial expression he keeps pulling out that just... annoys me. Personal thing. it's an annoying face and I wish he'd use less of it. Oh, and he shouts too much (probably the writer's fault) but it goes all kind of squeaky (probably because he's trying to maintain the accent... when he was shouting in FOP --- where his acting was very good for the record --- I heard some Scottish creeping in) Anyway, yeah... THOU SHALT NOT INSULT THE MIGHTY FOUR!!!

I could sit here and argue so many examples where I just really think Tom Baker did a horrible job at differienating between angry, sad, and intense concentration, but I won't. I just really just think David does a great job. ;D To be honest, I have no idea what expression you're referring to, CP. I love all his expression and his choice of voice. As for his voice going squeeky, it is a character trait he does for this incarnation of the Doctor. He even comments on how he picked it up from Five, which might explain why I like DT's and PD's Doctor's the most of any Doctor. So avoiding the long drawn out arguement we could get into, let's just agree to disagree. I think DT is an amazing actor and that his Doctor is fantastic and you don't, while you think TB is an amazing actor and his Doctor is fantastic and I don't.

Oh, this is exactly the type of debate we want here, though. It's not an argument, we're not being immature and saying 'ZOMG, UR DOCTER SUKS!!1'. We've found a difference in opinions and are calmly explaining each side. =D
As I've said (I think), I love every Doctor. They're all brilliant in their own way. For the longest time I could not decide on a favourite Doctor, and just recently Four squeaked ahead of the rest. Just by a bit. I've been watching just about only Four serials recently, so my love for him has increased immensely. But the same thing happens when I watch Three serials, or Six, or Seven.
But returning to the topic (sort of), the thing about Tom is that he makes the Doctor so alien. As he should be. Citing an example, 'This lighthouse is under attack and in a moment we might all be dead.' And he grins his mad grin after that. What human would do that? Tom brings an unpredictable edge to his Doctor, and that, I think, is what makes him one of the best Doctors.
Now, I'm just against Ten 'cos I'm rather sick of him being emo. But this series is looking up and he was my first Doctor, and so gets a special little place for that.
