Few people realize this, but being sober at a party is great. You can watch everyone else make arses out of themselves.

Those are some good fics there - I'm going to have to read them in full when I get the chance. Clocket - what goes on in Belize stays in Belize, okay? And the question of what on earth (or off earth) RTD smokes has vexed greater minds than mine over the past couple of years... Just want to express more love for Withnail and Eight - hilarious drunken hi-jinks aside, the ending alone is one of those great lump-in-your-throat moments in world cinema - certainly more moving than Ten and Rose snivelling at each other on some beach in Norway: REG quoting Hamlet, magnificently I might add: "...man delights not me: no, nor woman neither..." Another weird Who connection; allegedly, according to rumour, had oldschool Who not been cancelled in 1989, Sylvester McCoy was going to move on anyway after the (never made) Season 27; and one of the names mentioned as a possible Eighth Doctor was none other than Richard Griffiths who plays Uncle Monty. Now, that might have been something to see...

Richard Griffiths would have been hysterical. To have three of them in the same movie... especially THAT movie.
So... if he was the doctor, do you think that he'd still wear eight's Victorian costume? It might be a wee tight on him.

What? Richard Griffiths? Doctor Who? When did THIS happen?! Thank God he WASN'T the doctor is all I can say. After reading the SPC thread, I don't WANT him to be the doctor. That thread ruined it for all remotely unattractive men.

But your favorite doctor is Six, Ana. He's... next to One and Two.... the LEAST attractive of them. (To me.)

What are you talking about? Six is a stud-muffin. As is Two.

Six isn't unattractive, he just isn't sexy.

I beg to differ, Sex is VERY smexy thank you very much. lol. To JJPOR, actually, not that much hijinks was got up to in Belize (wow... that was a grammatical sentence...). Not by me at least. Though I did end up taking a barefoot hike through the jungle in my bathing suit at one point. Though I was completely sober andd it was our hosts fault for saying "yes, just swim across the river, no, you don't need to bring your shoes. the waterfall is just a short hike down the river bed. you won't need them" short hike. as in forty-five minutes through the bush and scrambling over rocks and stuff. and agitated crabs. and trees with spikes. and me in my two-piece O.o probably the coolest thing I've ever done in my life. and the waterfall was SO worth it. me misses Belize

I suppose Six has a certain je ne sais quoi, if you're into that kind of thing... Clocket, Belize sounds pretty amazing; I sincerely hope you get the chance to go back one of these days - "agitated crabs" And that's an excellent new pic you have there. As for Richard Griffiths, I don't know how close it came to happening, and it turned out to be a moot point in the end, because they cancelled the programme, but he certainly would have been a different sort of Doctor.

*giggles at the quote* These past few days, I've been quoting Withnail left, right and center at people and telling them to watch it. Mostly this is just earning me odd looks, but who knows?
If you want the avatar feel free to steal it! Good icons deserve to be shared!

"Withnail and I" had and still has a mass cult-following. There are whole groups that get together and geek out. It's almost as big as Who... not quite, but almost. It was in the eighties, anyway.

I think possibly my favourite single bit in Withnail is either the whole Uncle Monty escapade alluded to above, or the lighter fluid incident; when Withnail is demanding Eight's toolbox so that he can drink his antifreeze, and McGann says something like "don't you know not to mix your drinks?" - it's the way he says it; just cracks me up. And then Withnail collapses...
And apparently, REG thought it was water in the lighter-fluid bottle - that was what they'd rehearsed with - but the director had replaced it with vinegar without his knowledge; hence, the manic kind of UURRGGHH!!! reaction is partly real...

On the TV Tropes site they call it "Enforced Method Acting", and it seems to be more common than you'd think (like director William Friedkin firing a gun right next to the actors' heads - without warning - just before doing a take on the Exorcist, so they'd look genuinely frightened and shaken when the cameras rolled - the nut!)
That picture's great - really captures the characters - it even looks just like REG and McGann. Brilliant.

Hmm, picture works fine for me. I quite like it - especially REG, it just seems to capture something about him.
Anyway, I didn't know this thread was here. I watched Withnail & I recently and loved it. I've been laughing just reading the quotes in this thread and now I want to watch it again.
