Now, I don't want to go acting like some sort of wannabe authority figure, but... Ah, who cares, I love acting like some sort of wannabe authority figure!
As you probably know by now, the new series of Doctor Who will air in the UK, Germany and the USA beginning on 23 August this year, and in some other places the day after. There have also, as you may have seen, been online leaks of scripts and, apparently, a video file containing a rough cut of the opening episode. If you want to read or view these or find any other online spoilers relating to the new series, by all means do so, I can't stop you and I'm sure you're more than capable of finding them out there in what it has become somewhat passé to refer to as cyberspace.
However, I would ask all of you who frequent DbyA to extend a bit of thought and courtesy towards your peers, and to refrain from discussing any spoilers you may come across either during the next few weeks and from discussing new episodes once the new series has begun airing, unless you adhere to the following guidelines:
- New episodes of Series 8 should only be discussed in the official discussion threads for each episode, which I will try my very best to post on the day each new episode airs in the UK. You will notice them as they will be named after the episodes and will contain an OP saying something like "this is the official discussion thread for etc etc".
- DW Live will probably now be continuing during the airing of Series 8 - NO DISCUSSION OF NEW EPISODES SHOULD TAKE PLACE IN THE DW LIVE CHATROOM! Not even if all present confirm they have already seen them, because what if somebody who hasn't wanders in halfway through? If we ever get the cbox back, this will also apply to the cbox.
- If you are creating any threads of your own for the discussion of what might be considered spoilery material, please include "SPOILERS" or something similar in the thread title.
- If you post anything relating to spoilers in ANY thread, INCLUDING THE OFFICIAL EPISODE THREADS mentioned above or your own threads, please include a clear spoiler warning in your post, and then please, please, hide the actual spoiler itself and any subsequent quoting or discussion of said spoiler. This can be done in one of two ways :
a) Use spoiler tags: surround the text you wish to hide by surrounding it with the following notation: [*spoiler] [*/spoiler] removing the asterisks inside the square brackets - this should produce
b) If you prefer, white out the text you wish to hide, either by using the little font colour wheel thingie in the toolbar when you're creating a post, or simply by surrounding the text you wish to obscure with [*font color="white"][*/font], again removing the asterisks inside the square brackets The end result should look like this.
For the purposes of the above discussion, spoilers means anything relating to Doctor Who episodes which have not yet been aired, and anything relating to Series 8 episodes while Series 8 is airing for the first time. Obviously, at some point when anybody interested can reasonably be expected to have seen Series 8 we can stop treating any discussion of it as spoilers, but for the time being the above applies.
So there you go, just common sense and consideration for your fellow Who fans, that's all I'm asking for.
