Not sure if this is the right place for this, but she doesn't quite fit as a "companion", nor "assistant", nor "enemy "...
but as they've hinted in "Time of Angles" that he can't trust her, and that she may have killed him....and that she's not who she seems...
Well, let's entertain theories on WHO she might really be?
My pardon, if this has already been posted in some other thread. I just couldn't find where it might fit after several glances at the threads, forums and postings. (Mods, please move if necessary.)

I think it's fine here, mind you duck though...
Personally, I think River is other...I'm not at all sure precisely who she is as yet but I do hope they don't have to retcon her in order to make it fit, that p*ss#s me off nearly as much as the whole "Wait this goes against our established knowledge, quick throw in a 'The Doctor Lies' or 'River lies' and make it all better".

Much as I don't like her character or her role in the show, I don't think she can be classified as an ''enemy''. Either way, it's clear that she's not going to be that towards the end. ''Companion'' probably comes closest, as of yet.

She's not an enemy yet! But I still maintain that we will meet an Evil!River at some point. Or, maybe not...
The way it's going at the moment I think that show is hinting she's Amy's daughter and somehow half Time Lord? Which I'm really hoping isn't the case because, uh, unless Rory has a fob-watch lying around somewhere (which would be completely awesome mind) then River's flirting with the Doctor suddenly takes on a whole new level of disturbing*
The Master in Drag suggestion makes me giggle though, so I'm going to through my vote in for that one.

The Master in drag without a doubt. Only the Master can call the Doctor Sweetie. Actually the thought of River really being the Master makes her so much more bearable.

She's the Black Guardian. As I keep saying. I'll be proved right in the end! ;D
Seriously, though...I still wouldn't like to guess at this point, because I do think Moffat sometimes takes the twisty-turny stuff to the point of misdirection for its own sake, so who knows what he'll try to surprise us with?
I think Clocket's whited-out theory is actually strong contender, but have the same misgivings about it she has. ;D
So seeing as I can't click two or three of those boxes, I think I'll sit on the fence and go "other" for now too...

Based on some of the events in The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, I think River is ** being set up in the role of Judas Iscariot. Let me explain. When it was time to burn his body she said, "We'll do what the Doctor's friends always do; as we're told." In DotM when they were dropping her back at the prison she said that she escapes often enough, plus she has a promise to keep. Whoever she kills (and I have a theory about who), I think she does it because the Doctor tells her she has to do it, and then tells her that she has to stay in prison for a certain period of time. (BTW how rubbish is the security at the Stormcage Prison? She waltzes in and out like she has a passkey! Why do they let her keep the hallucinogenic lipstick and vortex manipulator?)
Having said all that, I really like the idea that she's the Master in drag. Someone needs to write fic! **

Interesting theory. Having JUST watched Imposible Astronaut/Day of the Moon, I know just what you're referring to. However, I took her comment to be that she had a promise to him to come when he invites and to honor his instructions... to not intervene no matter what happened. I still think she's likely to shoot or kill the doctor and do it for him. Remember, there was a Silence-thingy, watching from on top of the dune, witnessing this whole thing. I expect that it might have been River inside the spacesuit, and the doctor arranged this for the Silence thingy's benefit... and that one or both of them (Dr & River) were planning to intervene somehow with the tardis, to revive him... but then his friends decide to burn him instead... screwing up the plan. But given that Moffat is the master of switch ups and writes in a broad ark, it could just as easily be Amy's daughter in the suit, cause we're left with the kid regenerating into...what? River? or Amy>?

Speaking of that line, since WHEN do the Doctor's friends ''Do as [they're] told''?

Speaking of that line, since WHEN do the Doctor's friends ''Do as [they're] told''? True enough, although there have been occasions over the years when they would have been better off if they had... I like LL's theory quite a bit - honestly, I'm still thinking * there has to be some more dramatic payoff than "she's his wife from the future" (which was pretty heavily implied in her very first appearance), otherwise what's the point of all the mystery and misdirection in things like the Angels two-parter and at the end of S5? Really?*

I don't think WHO she is is so important as WHAT she is, remember what Father Octavian said. Plus, in that way they never have to make their relationship canon and never have to render it uncanon, it's just beside the point and how silly of all of us to think who he may or may have a lay about (as it were) with is actually the point of the past two-ish years.
