I was watching The Unearthly Child today, and there was a comment made by Susan that she named the TARDIS, and then said what all the letters stood for. I suppose I've never really given it much thought, but if that's the case, then does that mean the TARDIS also has another name?
Put it this way: I've always thought TARDIS was the name Time Lords gave their ship. It was the model, so to speak. But if Susan is the one who named it to describe it's size inside compared to it's size outside, then does that mean it's really a Time Ship 500, only lovingly nicknamed TARDIS?

Time capsule type 40 actually. I may or may not have used this answer in a game of Trivial Pursuit to spare myself from the nerdiness of spelling out and explaining TARDIS... never mind that it was the far more nerdy answer. Because it was not the answer on the card, and I got a perverse kind of pleasure from that. Erm...

In Deadly Assassin they call them "TT capsules" too for some reason. I guess it's just another example of how nobody really cared much about canon in 60s-70s television. When the TARDIS was first shown, it really was supposed to have been named as such by Susan, but then when the Master came on the scene they started referring to his time capsule as a "TARDIS" as well, presumably for the benefit of the audience, and the name became generally applied even though it originally wasn't supposed to be...
But yeah, Time Capsule Type 40 does sound very cool...
