Abby asked why I dislike the word 'fandom'.
One point, when I was on livejournal, there was this 'fandom' friending meme craze. Pretty much everyone filled out a survey, and others asked to be their friend purely based on what tv shows they watch, and which characters they 'shipped'. I found it gross, that people were judging each other by what tv show they watch.
Every since then, I really disliked the word fandom.
I dislike the fact that people who think they're a true geek are people who can't create their own personality. They throw the 'fandom' word around, you may as well just say 'my favourite tv shows are' instead of 'my fandoms are'.
I am part of this doctor who group, and I am part of a really small sailor moon project/group. However, I really dislike large online groups. I dislike how 'fandoms' fight, how they can't get along with their own people. I dislike how their seems to be popularity within these groups. Who can draw the best fanart, who can cosplay the best, whatever.
Most of all, I dislike how people take 'fandom' way to seriously. Why must we fight over Old Who vs New Who, why must we fight over who Betty should be with in the end of the series. I love Denial, Matt, and Gio, if it was up to me, she would be with all three!
It's a TV SHOW/MOVIE/BOOK, get over yourself.
I like my shows/books/etc.... and I enjoy talking about it to my family, neighbors, friends. I even stalk one groups on lj every so often, just to catch up on gossip/news etc but overall, it is a show/movie/book. There is more to life.
What does fandom mean to you? Do you love it or hate it?
p.s. Ok... I will admit, I really dislike Henry from Ugly Betty, mainly because of what he did to Betty and his overall personality. And yes, I would get a little upset with the writers, if some how, have Betty end up with Henry once the series comes to an end. But I will get over it. Eventually.
