He was probably more responsible than anyone else for making DW into adult SF with a (sometimes) critical point of view. 1970 is the start of DW as I know and love it. I've tended to take him for granted, but I shouldn't. Everyone's dying. I hate it.

Yeah, I think a lot of what we think of as Doctor Who's distinctive moral values and worldview, things that we take for granted to the extent that they even continue into NuWho simply because, well, that's the way the Doctor's supposed to behave, originate in Letts's era in charge of the show. Quite apart from all of the Three-era Buddhism.
So yes, sad news indeed!

Oh, no, I've been out of the loop and hadn't heard until now. How sad. He was certainly influential to the show...responsible for casting Tom Baker, among other things.
