I saw this on the Trapped By Monsters blog: www.abebooks.co.uk/books/weird/index.shtml?cm_mmc=nl-_-nl-_-g00-weirdbX-_-image10#misc2It's abe books' weird books corner. I thought we might collectively be interested in one title there - can you spot it? (Although, personally, I'd quite like the Platypus of Doom, because that sounds like mad Who-fic to me). I've seen some of these in the Bookseller's strange titles comp, but nice to see the covers, too.

To be honest, I feel somewhat frightened just knowing that some of those books exist.

I should think that any Who fan, especially ones who dabble in fanfic, would want to know How to Avoid Huge Ships.
Personally, I want to read People Who Don't Know They're Dead, because that sounds extremely inconvenient for all concerned.

I've karma-ed you for spotting it. ;D I'd heard of that one (among others) because I regularly read the Bookseller for work and it has this end column that has an annual prize for weird book titles. As I recall, that one has a subtitle that makes it even more priceless.

Merry, I have the feeling that the word 'self-published' or 'vanity press' must come into play with some of these. Or internet print on demand companies! (Things like Lulu, you know). The publishers are getting hit hard by the recession which comes at the very wrong moment (this side of the Atlantic) as the ebook controversy breaks in on them. I'm waiting with baited breath to see whether this brings about a book apocalypse, or a minor set-back. (In fact, publishers who have paid authors advances to write books - already established authors - are now claiming that the books written are unsatisfactory in order to avoid the expense of publishing them.) But don't let that put you off. The children's book market is still going strong, thanks to *small voice* Stephenie Meyer. If someone, however, was really good a plot, characterisation and style and had some interesting ideas, I don't think they should let that put them off, because of course, they're still after the next bestseller. (Yes, I am looking at someone in particular). Hmm, how did I get onto this?

I think I might know that someone in particular and I happen to be staring hard in his direction as well. Hmmm?
Of course, I won't complain when he keeps putting off original work for fic, because I'm a raging hypocrite... and I like the fic.

How to Survive a Robot Uprising has got to be somewhere in the Doctor's library...or maybe all dogeared and marked up under the foot of the hat-rack.
So, how to we avoid huge ships again?

I suspect the Doctor wrote that one! And I don't know - I haven't bought the book! I think we do it by paddling our own canoe and watching where we're going.

Torpedoes. Not so much avoiding as preventing... This Master-possession thing is getting out of hand. I mean, who decides how large a large ship is? You could end up torpedoing Doctor/Romana at that rate. *paddles off resolutely in own canoe with nautical chart* *turns chart the right way round and paddles back before being sunk by big Doctor/Rose ship* Oh.

Bah. Those sort of ships deserve to be sunk.

You know which book I'm dying to read? 1001 Ways of Serving Seaweed. At least I think it was called something like that. It's quite nutritious, or so I hear... *comforts* you can eat dried and seasoned chunks of it like chips. Really fishy-tasting and green chips... sorry, not helping am I?
