Clocket - you have just described the outfit that the next Doctor, regardless of who plays him, _MUST_ wear - I'd opt for the flipflops over the green tennis shoes, personally. I'll fire off an email to Moffat, RTD and the gang forthwith. Regarding Ace (and it was originally just a glib remark by me, without any thought behind it, but it has provoked an interesting thread, I think), I think everyone is dead right that the main thing that defined her character was her individualism, be that in clothing or in anything else. Not only did she not want to fit in, but in some sense she couldn't, it wasn't in her nature, and it was her main strength and most admirable characteristic (along with the bravery, loyalty etc, obviously.). It has become a truism to say she was the companion who broke the mould, but that's because it's true. She was in many ways a prototype for Rose; the good Rose from Season One of NuWho, not the needy, whiny, annoying Rose who showed up later. Magnus is right, I think, that Mel was overdressed and extremely 80s even by the standards of the 80s - perhaps an embodiment of the showbizzy razzamatazz that JNT was seeking to inject at that point with his stunt-casting and light entertainment stylings.

Actually, it was the other way around. She tried to get the other young girl to wear a tux for awhile and then by the last episode ended up wearing a dress until the end. Personally, I liked in the dress more. The difference between Mel and Ace is that Mel was very fashionable and with-the-times, which unfortunately makes her look rather ridiculous 20 years later. Ace was more of an individualist. She'd wear something because she liked it; if it just happened to be fashionable that was a bonus, but definitely not a requirement. Which is why we wore that bomber jacket all over the place. And in Ghost Light didn't she wear the dress for a while and then say enough is enough and go and put on some men's clothes?
