I started watching this today. I really liked the title music remix for this; it's probably my favorite and a shame it was only used for the one (or four, if you split them up) serial. The idea of the Doctor being put on trial by this Valeyard person is interesting; actually, after seeing the War Games and how badly he was punished by the timelords then it seemed strange to me that they'd left him alone as much as they did. I heard this is a pretty hated story by a lot of fans but I'm really liking it so far; maybe it gets worse further along.

I didn't mind it so much, though I'm stil shaking my head over the green!TARDIS.
I mean, I know it gets painted pink at some point, but green? It's bad enough that the Doctor's gone colourblind without his ship following suit (and no explanation given!)
Or maybe I was just watching a crappy copy.

I'm a little more than halfway through with this (I finished watching the part that people call Mindwarp), and I think I may be beginning to understand its reputation. Some parts of it were really painful to watch; not because of bad writing or acting, but because of the actions of the Doctor. I'm really hoping that the Valeyard has tampered with the evidence to make the Doctor look worse than he is, because that is NOT the way the Doctor acts. It left me cold inside.
Oh, by the way, I never saw any green TARDIS, clocketpatch. I think you just had a bad copy.

On a random note, wasn't the TARDIS supposedly green in the Troughton-era episodes? Vaguely remember that as a Did You Know factoid kinda thing, which means it's very likely to be dead wrong!
I adore the Trial of a Timelord theme - I was so excited when I heard it used with such frequency in the Sixth Doctor's Big Finish audios.
I'm only about partway through the serial at the moment - but my favourite part is undoubtedly the way all the Time Lords swivel around in their seats to watch the Doctor's latest wacky exploit. You just know they gather around the telly to watch Doctor Who every week!

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this story. Even Mel fails to annoy me as much as usual (Of course it could be that it is the first classic who dvd i own so no matter i would have been pleased).

Mindwarp is my favorite part. Brian Blessed, an actual alien landscape, dark story, jarring end, and it actually interacts with the Trial, whereas the others are just stories they wedged into the Trial. Strange how half the story isn't there. Colin and Peri say they're going off to some warrior type village, then are suddenly back talking about all the things that happened there.
Terror of the Vervoids is unforgiveable to me, despite Honor Blackman of the Avengers. I'm not sure I like this theme music, but I remember that ToaTl was what they were showing when it was new at my first DW fan event (Vervoids), and that theme had a strange semi-exciting jolt to it, of "newness", somehow. If that means anything.
Last of the classic Holmes pairs of characters with Mysterious Planet. Too bad someone else was script editor. Holmes died before his wrap up to ToaTl was complete and Pip/Jane Baker took over, unfortunately. Eric Saward, script editor, wanted to kill off the Doctor for good, at the end of the Trial, ending the series.

You have to kind of shake your head at the mad ambition of it, to be the man who ENDED Doctor Who; the whole concept of Trial was, I think, deeply flawed, but it does have its moments along the way. Pip and Jane Baker...I hope they can sleep at night, wherever they are... Whatever the opposite of the Midas touch is, they had it.
I like Glitz and Dibber; I like the Valeyard and the Inquisitor and Six's utter disrespect for the pair of them. Mindwarp is probably my pick of the bunch as well, for the reasons you outline, and Sil back for more, and as you say, BRIAN BLESSED!!! (sorry, but his name deserves to be bellowed, with gusto; like all of his lines! ;D). Peri and Yrcanos's "happy ending" feels tacked-on, really, but is welcome for sentimental reasons; Peri didn't deserve to go out as bleakly and unpleasantly as that.

You have to kind of shake your head at the mad ambition of it, to be the man who ENDED Doctor Who... Eric Saward IS the Master!! I wonder if it occurred to him that after ending Dr Who by having the Dr executed, and the satisfying "edgy" feeling that might evoke for him, we wouldn't actually have Dr Who around anymore... I mean, he must like Dr Who too. I can accept the Time Lords telling Six that Peri's off living in Candy Land with Yrcanos, but not Six believing it. All ToaTl really had going for it was how much further they took the villainy of the Time Lords, and softening it undid that. If they'd avoided the dreamy shot of the happy couple and shown at least a brief disgusted look on Six's face at the end, after getting away, I might have been happier.

I only saw this the once so I can't really comment. Though, it must have effected me at least on some level because I've got 20,000+ words of fic written on it (a WIP which really must be finished one of these days, curse it!)
I remember liking it a lot more than most of Six's stories. The theme song was suitably awesome. I think... this might have been the last bit of in-colour Who I watched, and I remember listening to the theme song thinking "well, there won't be anything new left after this". And then dancing. And then being blinded by that awful white flash at the end of the opening credits. Who's idea was THAT??
The audacity of someone to set out to try an deliberately end a show that had, at that point, been running 20-something years is just beyond me. I understand wanting the show to go out on an epic note instead of just petering off sadly into drivel, but wasn't Who just filler drivel to start with that accidentally hit a "wait a minute, wait a minute, this could be good" wall, bounced back, gained fandom, and did the ultimate underdog turn around? (repeatedly??)

I actually rather adore Glitz and for this reason alone (well okay and Ace and (Stellar, she so needs a fanfic the only witness to the arrival and departure of the TARDIS) made my other friend watch Dragonfire just the other night.
As for "Mindwarp" regrettably, I was shall we say, less than sober when watching that bit and have to watch it again before being able to say anything intelligent on the episode (meep).

(repeatedly??) Interesting way to put it. Of course, after the legitimization of DW in the 70s, and its development into an adult program, it was possible to look back at 60s DW in a new light, and draw it into the legend, retroactively. As for Saward, and perhaps taking the "legend" too seriously, you're saying something I agree with I think, but that I wouldn't have been able to put my finger on or put into words.
