Okay, based on the Mary Sue criteria one of my favorite book series from childhood is all about a Mary Sue. Can you say Nancy Drew? She was wealthy, pretty, good at everything and the only people who didn't like her were the villains. The POLICE didn't even mind that she was always meddling in their cases. It should be Mary Sue Drew! And her dad was a Gary Stu! I mean come on . . . a wealthy lawyer that was always helpful and was well-liked by everyone except the villains? I'm going to go and nurse my wounded illusions now.

There's a double-standard for Mary though, because once a character becomes iconic, like Nancy or the Doctor, they get 50-100 Sue-points shaved pro-bono off the top. T'is fact.
Also, for the most part Mary refers to self-insertion in fic when it is both obvious and annoying.
Though, I suppose (not going to name names) certain canon characters of certain iconic shows might occasionally do that too...

If you want to consider companions, I tried the test for Captain Jack and he got a 50, unsurprisingly, due to his immortality.
