For my birthday, I had asked for an audio copy of the recent Dr. Who audio: Melody Malone: The Angel's Kiss, read by Alex Kingston.
As you might guess, this is a story about River Song, who is slumming it in 1933 New York City. It's filled with a nudge-nudge, wink-wink and River's brand of flirting, and if you love the character, you'll enjoy this. However, I found the constant adult inside jokes to become annoying after a short while. Fortunately, the author decided to cut back on them about a quarter of the way into the book.
This is the cover image that appears in that last, sad episode that says goodbye to the Ponds...The Angels Take Manhatan.
but be warned that while the TV episode implies that this story is important to the storyline, the reverse is not true. That is, the sole character from the 11th doctor's cast that appears or is even mentioned, is River Song as she plays Melody Malone. (Think of it as River slumming it in the Holodeck of the enterprise, just for fun and relaxation...except, the adventure takes a dangerous turn and she has to move quick to avoid death.) Oh yeah, you might have guessed that it has a Weeping Angel in it too, but I'd hardly call that a member of the Doctor's cast. In short, there is no Amy, no Rory, no Doctor, and no other known characters at all, and the obvious trappings of Dr. Who are only hinted at, if you recognize them... and as a Dr. Who fan, you are sure to... cause that's why you've looked up this audio book, isn't it? So, sure it's fun.
I found the reader sees and recognizes the time paradox a bit faster than River does, but we'll call that foreshadowing and just go for the ride. And the ride lasts about an hour and 45 minutes.
So, if you're up for a River Song adventure, here's one for you... but please don't expect ANY tie in to current continuity nor the final "Winter Quay" or The Angels Take Manhattan episode.
