OK, so after watching all of season Five, and Six, I've finally worked my way up through One, Two, Three and stalled for awhile before almost finishing Four....
You guessed it, I've just discovered the Silence in the Library. Wow. I mean WOW~ knowing where this all leads, and then watching that initial episode... well, instead of a bunch of cryptic references, it's obvivous which ones have paid off, and which ones were red-herrings.
I am most impressed with "the Crash of the Byzantium"...as a predicted event that they meet at...but I must tell you, while I was watching a Time of Angels, I hadn't caught that the name of the ship was all that important... until I saw the tilt shot of the crash towering high above the main characters "on the beach". Wow. Just Wow!
I think we're still likely to see River yet...even if they recast her...there will be some explanation that will explain her "temporarily altered apearance"... Hey, if it has been done in comic books, they can write it into serial TV. (Think Marc Hammil's motorcycle crash and the opening of the Empire Strikes Back!)

What does this have to do with the Doctor being cruel or not, though?
I think this belongs over in The Assistants, rather than here, since it isn't really about the Doctor.
