After a discussion with my mom about all the wonderful characters who have gone by in the episodes who we dearly wished would have stayed along for more episodes, she suggested that I make a thread for it here on DbA. ^_^ We were just watching "Snakedance" the other day and both of us kept talking about how much we wished the Chela became a long-term companion. I also think that Jethro from "Midnight" had a lot of potential.

I agree on Jethro. He was smart, but still normal enough for watchers to be on the same page enough with. I liked Rita from 'The God Complex' actually. I don't know why. She was just pretty awesome. (I also thought Mickey would have been good in the long run. But RTD totally threw him under the bus all the time and made him wimpy and dumb. I always wonder what he would have done with 11!)

No, I never dream of companions.... (though last night I kept falling back asleep thinking that I was regenerating, and going back in time to fix something that I had just said... much like Matt Smith....)

Frankly, I really thought that they were grooming Rita to be the new companion when he dumped Amy and Rory.... don't you think?@!

Hmmm, dream companions... He's never shown up in the show proper, but I think that Sir Sandford Fleming would make a fun companion, or at least a fun one shot guest character. He invented time and roller skates, I'm sure him and the Doctor would find s omething to talk about. There's also this: www.amazon.com/Time-Lord-Sandford-Creation-Standard/dp/0375727523

It's fairly widely known that Samantha Briggs was intended as the next full companion after Polly, and there are various speculations on how she might have gone down if she'd stayed. Would she have been forced to drop the attitude and accent, like Dodo? Looking at various online reviews, she seems to be Marmite -- people either love her, or hate her.

My first dream companion would be Jenny. There's so many possibilities for stories, character development, and dynamic chemistry for both father and daughter. Also, there are so many questions left unanswered about her, especially whether she's a Time Lord, a humanoid with Time Lord characteristics, or something entirely new. I really hope Moffatt decides to use her in the future. Other dream companions would include: Wilf (the guy was a amazing as a temporary companion during The End of Time) Luke Smith (following in his mother's footsteps and providing a Zoe like persona to bounce ideas off of as well as providing last minute brilliant ideas) Ross Jenkins (he would be a modern day Benton with a bit of Yates thrown in for good measure) Lady Christina de Souza (her energy and zealous, and thrill for adventure really made me enjoy her by the Doctor's side).

Maybe he could show up in a special or a humorous short for the Children in Need or something. I think a visit to ol' Ben Franklin might prove interesting, since he's credited with Daylight Savings Time... and adjustment occurs in the US to save energy and daylight by altering our time zone one hour each summertime. Do you guys do that too? I recall in the early sixties, there was some option if your community wanted to observe that practice... and a significant chunk of Indiana would not, so the line for crossing over from Eastern Timezone to Central took a huge jog...and TV networks had to say things like, "Watch Hawaii 5-0 tonight at 8, 7 Central." It was a pain and confusing for some. My wife comes from near that area, and she says those who live near the border where the time zone changes are always having problems. Could be a funny concept for DW to grapple with, or to try to explain... "Rory...shut up and listen to me..."

I would have loved to have seen more of those two old guys in 'Talons of Weng-Chiang' - they could have almost had their own show, just loved them.... Would have been fun to see them poking about in the jungles of Skaro or something.

I think Shirna from Carnival of Monsters would have made an excellent companion.

Ah yes, the people who no doubt sold Six his coat. Though I would say take both of the shysters, the pair of them had a good thing going, even if they did dress up in Froot Loops and glitter.

I somehow feel as if I'm not supposed to refer to stories not easily available now... but I'd say Pamela Salem's Toos, from Robots of Death, who was rumored to be a possible companion at the time. Also Calib from Face of Evil (basically the villain), because he'd have been a cool monkey wrench (spanner) to throw into the proceedings... Lightfoot and Jago too of course, from Talons, but the rumor there was that they were supposed to get their own spin-off show. How can you listen to them grunting and groaning in the dumb waiter, and not see them as a classic sort of team?
It might have been fun to have Linx the original Sontaran not die, but stow away on the Tardis instead, seemingly coming back from the dead for every story, for a season or so. Three or Four could open a Tardis closet occasionally, and there's good old indesctructible Linx, staggering out to be killed once again.
PS-- The above is one of those ideas which seem funny for approximately one minute. Minute's over....

Magnus, I think you'll have to ask JJ first if he wants to appear on the show. ;D

;D I like your thinking, Magnus. Eventually he could team up with those other Sontarans who got lost in there in Invasion of Time...and the Cyberman who went missing in one of the Five stories...and that poor 1920s policeman out of Black Orchid. They could band together to fight for survival in their trek across the TARDIS's dark heart... And of course, unlike many of his latter-day comrades, Linx was as resourceful as anything - so you could see him making a go of it. Or something like that. Yes, I've heard about the Jago and Litefoot spinoff series. Of course, they did get their own spinoff series in Big Finish audios, eventually. I've listened to a couple of the now and thought they were very good - just as they were in Talons. I suppose the other oft-cited companion-who-could-have-been is Ray out of Delta and the Bannermen. I personally would think Who without Ace would be very much the poorer, but if Ace was not to be, they could do a lot worse than Ray I think. Or the talking cabbage suggested by Tom Baker, maybe? ;D I suppose any one of Ace's various "girlfriends" would have made a good addition and an interesting TARDIS dynamic. Mags the werewolf-thing from Greatest Show in the Galaxy might prove the most interesting in that regard.

Magnus, I think you'll have to ask JJ first if he wants to appear on the show. ;D Oops, I lack context. Don't know the in-joke. jjpor--- Good idea... I like the idea of the Dr making some offhand remark that at any given time, there are probably two or three "villains" (or former companions??!) lost in, or stuck in the Tardis somewhere! While we're on the infamous Tom cabbage, what about that Inv O'Time giant man-eating plant by the pool? What better companion could there be? Imagine it... the regular humanoid companion is relegated to the role of forklift operator, so that the plant can get around, and Time Lord and trusty (and hungry) plant friend bravely face the perils of new planets, side by side. It could take on the duties of K9, destroying the Dr's enemies so that he can maintain his non-violent status. The Doctor would just have to trick the villains into stepping into its "mouth". Imagine each Tom companion's reaction to her new duties... right now for me, Romana One's is the most enjoyable to contemplate!

I can imagine the raised eyebrow when he explains her role. And then the way she'd bond with the plant a la K9 - you know, spraying its leaves for it and things. ;D And then, in State of Decay, we have the plant singlehandedly leading a mob of revolting peasants to storm the vampires' castle and claim their throne for its own...! I mean...just how big is the TARDIS's interior? You could imagine whole lost tribes and vanished ecosystems somewhere in there. I like this fanfic a lot - it's along the same sort of lines as we have been discussing: www.whofic.com/viewstory.php?sid=30256

I just read over this and was delighted at the thought of the TARDIS hallways and subterranean levels being sprinkled here and there with forgotten bad guys and rejected companion has-beens... where old contenders for the job of Companion go to commiserate with one another over a pint and grumble about how it Should have been Them.
Maybe the man-eating plant by the pool was a relative of the Cabbage.

There's some incredible art somewhere I used to have bookmarked of the artist's vision of the infinite interior of the TARDIS. The first picture is of the console room and surrounding rooms, and then they just sort of zoom out and bet more spacey-wacey from there until I think one is literally a map of whole continents. The labels are the best part too... I'll have to see if I can track down those again, they're just really cool! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A-Ha! I think I have it! www.flickr.com/photos/50409075@N05/sets/72157623985805505/It also appears that there have been several more pages added since I last checked in! My favorite part so far remains the labels on the three cafe tables in the first actual map page. ^^
