I've just finished watching the third Eccleston doctor who show... "The Unquiet Dead" I think.
There appear to be constant references to "Cardiff" as an unpopular place to be or to be in.
This appears to be a running joke. Why is Cardiff so bad? Is there something I'm missing? Is there a US equivalent to make the joke ring for us?
PS: Is there a better forum or thread to ask these types of questions in?

Cardiff is referenced loads of times because that's where filming takes place for the new series ... well, most of the time, anyway.
Hope that helps!

The Vortex or the Ninth Doctor sub-board would probably be better, but the sub-boards get so confused it doesn't really matter. Heh.
As Lea says, most of the series is filmed in Cardiff. From what I understand it's a very Cardiff-y looking London we see most of the time. There's also this one corridor under the Cardiff Millennium Center which shows up without fail in every. single. season. of new Who. Often repeatedly. It makes me laugh every time I see it.

I think a Londoner like Rose would moreover regard Cardiff as being a bit provincial and out-of-the-way and therefore a fairly unlikely place to be getting constantly invaded by aliens etc. And RTD, being Welsh himself, could probably get away with that sort of fun-poking more than any English writer could without causing offence.
