Sarah: Don't forget me. The Doctor: Oh, Sarah. Don't you forget me. Sarah: Bye, Doctor. You know, travel really does broaden the mind. The Doctor: Yes. Until we meet again, Sarah.
fitting, I think
Farewell, Sarah

Awful news. I didn't even know she was sick. She's with Harry and the Brig now.

It`s just hitting now. I didn't realize she was sick. It never even passed my mind that this was what you were talking about on the c-box. I thought you were said because the SJA had been cancelled and my reaction was to google it, and then find out - She was only a few months older than my mum. Because of what I thought and what I googled, I discovered that half of s.5 was filmed at the same time as s.4. I don't know if this means half the series will run in the fall. I don't know if I'll be able to watch it without crying if it does.

"Pain and loss define us as much as happiness or love. Whether it’s a world or a relationship… Everything has its time and everything ends."
Sarah Jane Smith - Doctor Who: Series 2 - School Reunion
The Doctor: Sorry I didn't get a chance to ask. You haven't... There's hasn't been anyone... You know... Sarah Jane Smith: Well... there was this one guy. I travelled with him for a while. But he was a tough act to follow. (sadly) Good-bye, Doctor. The Doctor: Oh, it's not good-bye- Sarah Jane Smith: (tearing up) Please, say it. Please. Say it. This time. Say it. The Doctor: Good-bye... My Sarah Jane.

She was, in essence, every definition of a true star - on and off set. I'm still in shock and utterly, utterly gutted.

here's a sweet and moving tribute (?) blog(?) memorial(?) by Tom Baker, [tissuewarning] www.tom-baker.co.uk/pages/content/index.asp?PageID=159 [/tissuewarning] also Mary Tamm had this to say: sad, sad day. Just heard the news of Elisabeth sladen's death. i can honestly say she was one of the loveliest women i ever met - beautiful, talented, charming and clever. i was over the moon for her when her career in dr who was resurrected with the sarah jane adventures; she was brilliant in it. how we will all miss her. goodbye lis, you were loved more than you knew, dear friend. and this one made me cry www.dorktower.com/2011/04/19/dork-tower-wednesday-april-20-2011/

We're still all in shock at our house.... as Starflower said, "My mind just can't process this. It can't."
We were just adjusting to the loss of dear Mr. Courtney, who was at least understood to be 'getting older'.... but this is just.... incomprehensible still. Rest in Peace, dear Lis, loved by so very many.

Yeah, I was just sort of stunned by the news when I finally found out about it. Honestly, completely unexpected. I had to read the story twice before I believed it. I don't think there was any indication she was sick, was there? But yes, very sad indeed. And so soon after Nicholas Courtney too. And I'm just thinking about her family and what they must be feeling.

From what I understand, JJ, very few people knew was ill, including close friends and coworkers, seems like perhaps just her family knew, and really, as Lea pointed out to me, she probably wouldn't want such a fuss

No matter how many times I read the news, there's something in me that can't quite believe it.

Tom Baker was one of the first people I thought about when I heard. I know he absolutely adored her. It crossed my mind pretty soon after hearing, too - especially when they were both such friends with Ian Marter - it's hard to lose someone who (however little you may or may not see them) is a link to someone else who's gone. With that in mind, I was a little taken aback by his post the first time I saw it, but then I saw the tweets on DWM (through some link or other) & the editor had obv. asked Tom to contribute to a radio tribute and received the reply that Tom had written a post for his blog, from his heart, but he didn't think he could read it out on the radio. And then I read it again and was sad (like a lot of yesterday), and thought: awwww. He is trying too hard. Sorry, rambling. And Merry, thanks so much for pasting in the comment from Mary Tamm - it's really nice, and how generous of her, too. I hadn't seen that before, although I think I have picked up on most. (I think that Colin has also commented in Twitter at least.) Group hug, everyone? And a stern warning that no one else from DW should follow just yet.

I'm relieved you do, even though, as you say - such a shock. The Brig and Sarah Jane in a couple of months. Anyway, I am resolved to be cheerful today. I hear there are cute kittens round here somewhere, yes?

If I could have made a list of those well-known people whose deaths would have struck deeply at me, she'd have been near or at the top, but it just never occurred to me that it would happen. She seemed so vital.
She seems to have been working heavily, trying to get as much done before the end. I went on about her for awhile on Facebook, but most FB friends hadn't heard of her, and I'm now on the bummed side because of that. I want to post more stills of her with "R.I.P." there, but that brief period for "mourning" celebrity deaths has passed, and perhaps they'll wonder why I'm dwelling on it. People die and it's so anti-climactic, no matter what, seemingly.

Agreed - it was very much out of the blue, Magnus. And all the more shocking for that.
She does seem to have tried to carry on working for as long as possible - I saw today that the last three Sarah Jane Adventures two-parters she filmed will be showing sometime as a tribute to her (although that is apparently the end of the series - a pity on the one hand, because I have a high regard for all of the other actors and characters in it, but on the other hand fitting. I'm not sure it would have worked had they tried to carry it on without her).
It is galling that so many people seemed oblivious to her passing. Not so much of an issue in the UK, where she received a lot of coverage, but I'm sure quite a lot of people wondered who she was. I wouldn't let that stop you from paying tribute to her in whatever way seemed fitting to you. It was after all a big shock to those of us who were fans, and she certainly deserves to have her death marked in as many ways as possible, I would think.
