It never fails to amaze me why the Doctor never left Adric and Tegan to the tender mercies of the Master - I couldn't stand either of them - and don't get me started on Peri and Mel. Bonnie Langford...*shudder*

What in the Universe was the Doctor thinking of having Peri and Mel as companions. Wouldn't they just do your head in!
Mind you, in the Big Finish audios, Mel is a much better defined character and Bonnie Langford plays her extremely well, especially the Sixth Doctor audios.
May be worth you listening to some of these. I couldn't believe the difference when I listenend to them.

Peri and Mel make me feel sorry for Six. Those two plus the Coat... I dunno how he survived.

In hindsight, Mel, well certainly not the best, isn't the worst companions. Minus the Scream, obviously.

I quite liked what I've seen of Vicki, actuslly. She's quite smart, and loads better than Susan (I haven't seen any old episodes except for the first two seasons of Hartnell, so all I have to compare her to is Grace, Susan, and the new companions)

She's trying to be American. But Americans deserve the bad stereotypes, so it's okay. Kinda. Peri was never in Kinda! pause for groans... This is the tricky adjustment period for me, where I don't yet know what things people mean, and which they don't.... I complain about Americans myself, and I'm thinking about objecting? I'm clearly just out of my mind.... The problem with Peri seemed to be the strange, awkward lines they wrote for her. Otherwise, she's pleasant enough to me. Her accent is a bit strange, and it lapses occasionally, but it's American enough. I'm trying to imagine the conversation where JNT told her she had to pretend to be American in real life.....

*groans*
It dd make me laugh a bit though. I give you 3 out of 5 stars.
Adjust away! The majority of the people on this board are Americans so if you see them complaining about themselves I think it's safe for you to join in as long as you don't go overboard. I know I do (but then, I'm from Canada where complaining about America is a national pastime - never mind that our economy is completely dependent on them *sighs* we're a silly bunch)
I'd like to hear that conversation too. *scratches head*
Peri's accent isn't American though. Not even ish. My room mate thought she was a British person pretending to be Australian when I first showed her a Peri episode so...
But the character is solid, and I sort of like Peri. She's likable in a disfunctional sort of way.

I suppose I ought to make it clear that I'm American. I left that out without realizing it.

=D We love bad puns! We're very good at making them.
Most of the Americans on this board (in fact, I think most American Doctor Who fans) are all right with some bashing. Mostly 'cos we're Anglophiles and likely to agree! But! If we ever get a member that's just about as patriotic as can be, I'd like us to be civil and not cause world wars over the internet. However, your own opinions on 'American' characters in Doctor Who are quite all right.
Peri still bothers me, though. I can't remember what I first thought of her accent. A few words she can get spot on but then she'll say something distinctly British that, were I not an Anglophile, would make me go, 'huh?'.
But (rather late, yes), I (we) digress. This thread is in the First Doctor board, if anyone's noticed.

Just noting (for the sake of the original topic) that I always rather liked Vicki - what is it about her that you don't care for? She and Steven were so cute together in The Time Meddler, and she was definitely the smart one there... At least she wasn't a perpetual scream/twist-the-ankle/cry companion like Susan was, she had some intelligence.
I have to concur on Peri - I expect One would've driven Peri out of his TARDIS with his walking-stick, post-haste.
*firmly* "Get out! Out! Out! Who let you into my TARDIS, you idiotic tart?" whack thwack! *whining and falling out of her top* "But I don't understaaaaand!"

Yes I'm with everyone else. I love Susan and Vicki.(Yes Susan did scream a lot. Which bothered me. But I still loved her.) Now I loved Vicki. She was smart. And if you ask me brave. It was kind of a flash of air from Susan's screaming.(No I still love Susan!)
