Oh, if only; if only, eh? I'd rather have had him than who we ended up with - Alan @#!%ing Davies...
;D ;D ;D
Not the Daily Mail's finest hour, anyway. Not that they have many fine hours.
Dammit, now I want to see a historical about Joan of Arc with Alfred Molina and Audrey Tautou in it! I bet RTD made that one up on purpose just to make papers look stupid. ;D

Heh. The earliest fanfic I ever posted was in response to an article in the Daily Mail Mirror stating that Sean Bean was to play the Doctor. (No link to it, because, you know, Old Shame).

Does it feature the Doctor swearing at people in a Yorkshire accent, shortly before shooting them with a flintlock rifle? ;D
The thing I don't get is why Alan Davies? Rowan Atkinson, Richard E Grant, Robert Carlyle, the other usual suspects who come up whenever the Doctorate becomes vacant, I can see. Bill Nighy, for that matter (and I think he'd be great). But why Alan Davies?! Why??!! Somebody tell me why?! ;D

Wait, apparently I read the article wrong; I thought it was rumouring Bill Nighy Doc. Apparently no.
On that list of suspects, I still kind of wish Richard E. Grant had be given a chance. He was awesome in Shalka, and Withnail & I, which are the only things I've seen him in... but damn, if they'd wanted to continue with this whole angsty Doctor thing, he's the only one I'd trust to pull it off properly.
He's such a lovable bastard.

Yeah, I think so too. I seem to remember RTD being none-too-complimentary about his performance in Shalka, though.
Well, we'll keep our fingers crossed; Nighy for Twelve!

I heard that about RTD too, to which I shook my fist "WERE YOU WATCHING A DIFFERENT WEBCAST?!?!?"
However, I've also heard that he was difficult to work with while they were recording that, so maybe therein the reason lies?

Perhaps because for years the mental image of the Doctor was of a curly-haired eccentric, and Davies was best known for Jonathan Creek? These days Davies is probably thought of more as the lovable halfwit from QI, of course.

I've seen a few episodes of Jonathan Creek (in which there seemed to be a large number of people I recognized from Doctor Who) and Alan Davies did seem kind of Doctorish in that. But yeah, I can't really see him being able to pull off the Lonely God/Far More Than Just Another Time Lord aspect. Or the Time War angst.
