I knew about Mcgann's wig (and suspected it even before I knew for sure), but HARTNELL? before RTD said it on that Confidential I never had the slightest inkling to even think that he was wearing a wig.
this makes me strangely sad.
Did anyone else know about this??

Sure, I don't think men would have walked around in the early 60s with long hair, though he seemed to be a sort of reference to earlier times when old men sometimes grew it longer. There used to be that expression, "longhair music" for classical music, because conductors had it long sometimes apparently.
I was going to say Troughton had a wig, but suddenly I'm only 90% sure.

They started out with a wig for Troughton when they were trying to decide what he would look like, but as he said "It made me look like Harpo Marx!" - so they did away with the idea and just gave him the Beatles haircut instead. It's all his own hair.
Likewise Pertwee, heh... his lovely fluff didn't need any help to be fluffy. :-)
But to get back to One - no, I never even realized that. Which is a testimony to it being a good wig well-worn and carefully used, as the few publicity shots I've seen, where he appeared at an air-show to sign autographs, etc. he had One-hair... but then, those were publicity.
Then there's the shots where his hair gets all fluffy and messed up... hrm.... those didn't look 'wiggy' at all and make me wonder if he only started with a wig and grew out his hair?
