Kay, was anyone else really dissapointed that Tom Baker didn't get the role of Master? I kept watching Jacobi (who did a great job no mistake) and thinking "Tom could have done this better..."
And it woul have made the jelly babies line that much creepier.

I thought Tom was just joking when he said he wanted to play the Master, so I can't say I was disappointed with Jacobi. Having him as the Master would have been completely amazing, though.

I'm not sure he was joking or not, but I'm near certain he auditioned.

I was thrilled (as close as I get these days, anyway) to see Derek Jacobi, and I thought he did a great job. Tom as the later Master, Saxon, great if he wasn't such a large man now-- he needed to be very animated for that part.

SO... I was watching Batman Begins with my room mate while eatting tacos (we lead very interesting lives) and couldn't help thinking that Liam Nelson was creepy as creepy as Ra's al Gaul (or however you spell that) and that he had a perfect Master beard. Of course, once I noticed this I spent the whole rest of the movie urging him to say 'and You Will Obey Me! (which, having seen the movie before, I knew wasn't going to happen, but alas) So, yeah. He'd make an awesome Master. And, off-topically DARK NIGHT!!! WHOOT! My other fannish love... (though, my love is kind of noobish in that I'm not sure what day it comes/came out on)

That would've been SWEET! Do you mean, the Saxon master of the older Professor master?

I think Tom might have been a really good Master to be honest, if he had taken it seriously. I'm thinking of the occasional dark or angry bit he did as Four, which were so much more effective precisely because he was goofing around most of the time.
Having said that, I truly, truly, believe that they badly missed a trick when they didn't keep Jacobi as the Master for the whole end-of-season two-parter. I'll admit Simm made me laugh quite a few times - especially the gasmask bit - and obviously RTD was going to opt for a youngish, flavour-of-the-month actor, because that is the ethos of the new series, but ultimately it all didn't amount to much. Then I think of Jacobi's one scene as the Master...those eyes...that cold, lordly, bearing, the sense that he gave a damn about nothing and nobody in the universe...and all conveyed in just a couple of lines. Brrrr.
And I think about what it would have been like seeing Jacobi order the death of 10% of the world's population (an act of stunning villainy that was totally negated by the reset button ending. Not the last time RTD would do something like this in a season finale - "detonate the reality bomb!"), or him and Tennant playing off each other, and I think...damn...what might have been...

Tom, when acting dark, scares the pants off me. Also, if RTD were looking for the ratings just the stunt of 'Scarfman is now the Master' would have been pulling them in. Though... it might have detracted from the story with everyone going Scarfman? Scarfman? and not really paying attention. Though... seeing as that story was a bit *special* anyway (I honestly don't remember half of it, except for Doby!Doctor and cringing a lot towards the end).
Yeah...
More Jacobi!Master would have been great also. Scary man!
Now, that said, I didn't mind Simm. I think if the plot had been a bit better handled I would have liked him more.
He should have had a goatee though.
Which leads me to...
Did anyone notice, when Jacobi regenerated into Simm, just befor ethe credits rolled, Simm at the end of Utopia actually had the ghostings of a beard???

Actually, I did - and I agree 100% that The Black Goatee of Evil would have made everything better (not that people would be likely to vote for anybody sporting a Black Goatee of Evil, but then, he did have those brainwashing satellites). I'm probably a bit harsh on Simm above - as I admit in another post, I actually quite liked him overall, and I think that a lot of the flaws were probably down to the script rather than the actor. The sheer evil glee he brought to the part was pretty cool, I thought. And I thought the whole twisted relationship between him and Lucy was very interesting, and quite disturbing if you thought about it. Raises the whole shuddersome issue of the Master having companions, which is an interesting idea in itself. I still think Jacobi!Master would have been amazing, though, given a bit more screentime.

Truth to tell... my only real big problems with that finale were:
laser screwdriver/Dolby Doctor
That was just really poorly done, and made me laugh more than anything.
Reset switch/floaty-glowly-angel Doctor
Reset switch was annoying, but I'll accept. Floaty-glowy-angel Doctor just made me cringe.
Oh, and the Doctor shouting REGENERATE!!! at the end. *rolls eyes*
Simms was awesome though, and it amused me how he nicked lines from Delgado. His relationship with Lucy was interesting. He also gave the very good impression of being completely and utterly insane.
"Jelly baby?"

Simm certainly did play the Master as a total nutter, and in a convincingly irrational way...Certainly, Simm!Master had a lot of potential - just witness all of the dark, twisted fanfic he's generated on Teaspoon.
I did notice the Delgado lines, and the bit where he's watching the Teletubbies was obviously referencing the bit in "Sea Devils" where Delgado is whistling along to The Clangers. I thought it was really nice the way he played the part as a sort of anti-Ten; there were moments when he seemed deliberately to be mimicking Tennant's mannerisms and delivery, which I thought were pretty cool.
All in all, I was a lot less disappointed with the Season 29/Three finale than I was with the most recent one. I don't know if you've seen "The Stolen Earth"/"Journey's End" in the colonies yet, but I felt, well, short-changed, to be honest. You may disagree.

I'm not sure if it has or hasn't come; I don't actually own a working television set. I'm one of those terrible internet pirates you hear so much about (but, in my favour, I *do* rent the boxsets from the local internation video place)
Anyway, yes, I've seen it, and you can see my long rant of feeling cheated/betrayed in the forward in time section. I don't want to go over it all again.
Anyway, back to topic, I was rather peeved that RTD brought back the Master, apparently, just to kill him off again and make the Doctor angst. Would have bee fun to have Simms slipping off somehow (built his own TARDIS over the year? Stolen ship from TW?)

Would have bee fun to have Simms slipping off somehow (built his own TARDIS over the year? Stolen ship from TW?) I thought the whole point of the Master was that he ALWAYS survives to plot another day, no matter how unlikely it may seem - eg. "Planet of Fire", "Survival" etc. So, yeah, I was disappointed when he apparently died. I suppose that bit with the Ming The Merciless ring and the red nail varnish was supposed to leave it open for him to return - and I hope he does in the 2009 specials - but I was disappointed when RTD et al said that they had no specific comeback in mind when they scripted that. They could be lying, I suppose...

I do hope so. They seem to lie quite a bit...
Rose will never come back.
Torchwood and Doctor Who will go their own seperate ways

If he does come back, I cross my fingers for him to magically stay as Simm!Master despite that whole furneral pier. I mean, if Ainley!Master could get burned down and come back well...
and I would like to see more of Simm because, plot asside, he was verily awesome.

I'm thinking that when/if the do bring the Master back, they'd use Simm.
