For those of you who are NOT familar with Mr. Peabody and Sherman ( you can find their first adventure on YouTube, where their relationship "a Dog and his boy" are defined and set-up...including the establishment of the "Way Back" machine to instantly travel back in time to historically important dates and events.
They pop up in the recent Dr. Who/Bill & Ted cartoon as the earliest incarnation of the Doctor... but my kids didn't know who they were or why it was funny!
This was a five minute adventure in the cartoon show, "Rocky and Bullwinkle Show" by Jay Ward from about 1957-1963 or so. You had to wade through all the continued plots and rapid fire jokes in the witty show to get to THEIR segment, but it never failed to amuse.
I bought a DVD of the Best of Mr. Peabody and Sherman vol 1 to show the kids, but they resisted sitting down to watch it. In fact, they were openly hostile to the idea. So, during the last hour before they left for camp, I popped it into the DVD player and watched a few of the episodes. Within minutes, they had both walked into the room to find out why mom and dad were laughing and snorting at the bad puns, and sat down to watch one or two episodes.
Victory! Now they know what Mr. Peabody and Sherman was and why we honor them with a glimpse in a Dr. Who animated cartoon joke!
Has anyone else heard of them, or remember Jay Ward's seminal creations in the 1950s?!

My only prior exposure to them was in an episode of the Simpsons, one of the Halloween specials I believe, where they very briefly appeared alongside those two green slobbering aliens. Thanks very much for the information, Kirk - I feel like I have learned something today.

They're back. Expect to see you all for DWLive. An outstanding story arc, from what I hear. Hope I'm not disappointed. River Song doesn't even show up, so I'm told....

I guess I assumed without thinking that kids still watched all Jay Ward cartoons like Sherman and Peabody... I always gravitated to the kids' shows that slipped in lots of adult jokes. Bullwinkle, S&P, George of the Jungle, Super Chicken, Tennessee Tuxedo (the one least for adults but still good)... these are instrumental in growing up a smartass!

I just completed a "review" of the product on Amazon dot com for anyone who cares. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions. I tried to touch on them all briefly.
