Why does Turlough want to kill the Doctor? As a long-running sub-plot, I can see where this might engage the British kids watching the series very well.....
"Look out, Doctor.... he's right behind you! Oh no, don't drink that poison, Turlough is trying to kill you. Look out! Oh mommie, why doesn't he just boot him out of the Tardis?"
But seriously folks, what's the motivation for having a viper in the nest?

It's a long-running subplot of three stories... though, that's half a season in the old series, or *calculates* six weeks with the twice weekly airing during the Fivey era. (wow, I should not be able to make these calculations so quickly for a show airing a decade before I was born in another country) Ahem. Anywaaayyys.... You'll be wanting to watch the Black Guardian Trilogy for details: www.denofgeek.com/Reviews/304693/doctor_who_the_black_guardian_trilogy_dvd_review.htmlBut if you don't mind spoilers, I'll sum it up for you: Vilsor Turlough was a native of the planet Trion. His family got caught up in a Civil War when he was a teenager. Turlough was briefly in the military before becoming a political exile. He was stranded on Earth and somehow ended up at a boarding school run by the Brigadier (who had lost his memory for plot purposes). I have no idea how they mistook Turlough for a teenager and let him enrol. It's a mystery which has yet to be solved. Anyway, Turlough was stranded on Earth and not very happy with it. The Black Guardian (a powerful cosmic force with a dead bird for a hat) appears to Turlough and promises him freedom if he will complete a task. Turlough asks what said task will be and the Guardian tells him that he is to kill "a very bad man". Turlough wants freedom and thinks that the Doctor is evil, on realizing that the Doctor is good and that he's been tricked and can't escape the deal he's made with the Guardian, he tries to kill himself. It all ends happily though with Turlough becoming a companion and eventually being reunited with his family and going home to Trion (where he hopefully wasn't immediately shot for treason). As to why the Doctor was putting up with him through all of this? His companions didn't get it in the slightest and the Doctor never really gave any explanation, but I like to think that he understood Turlough's predicament and was taking pity on a fellow exile.

Perhaps "Teenager" on Trion is someone who looks as old as Turlough did. Problem solved. Next case...

Yeah, the dead birds were really something... Who decided that the Big Daddy Externals needed to have dead birds on their heads?
... That and the leopard-ish print collar...! XD

Define "TARDIS" in this context. Better yet, define "joyride."
