I just finished reading Autumn Mist by David McIntee last night.
Like many of the EDA's it has it's highs and lows, but I suppose it was worth the read.
Before reading the book I had read a few reviews of it and I have to agree with on in particular that stressed the fact that 'litterally, nothing seems to happen for the first, strike that, more than the first half, of the book.' They're right, nothing happens.
I actually pretty much only read the parts that had the Doc in them, and some of the parts following Fitz. When they come back together about 5/8ths of the way thorough the book, then you can tune back in and actually read it.
My imidiate thoughts upon reaching this point in the book were roughly the same as Fitz's apparently. "Huh, Wuh?" Watch the spoilers here: It all of a sudden turns out to be a book about the Battle of the Bulge, Doctor Who and the Sidhe. (Also known as the Fae or celtic faeries, more or less.) Yeah, it ends up working OK actually, but it's still really odd when you stop and realize what you're reading after a while.
Highlights of the book include a group of soldiers and Fitz arguing about how to steal a German tank and dismissing each other's ideas as mad, while the Doc, without preamble, jumps out from behind the bush they're hiding behind and proclaims "Hello! I'm an Allied spy, could I have your attention please?" It made me laugh. It also proceeds to take him about 3/4 of a page to take the tank with a bit of help from the other men.
Also I liked the brief mentions of the fact that the Doctor is still missing his shadow carrying over from the previous book, Unnatural History. I thought they did a really cool job of working that in to give you an interesting perspective of what the Doc must seem like to the other people he's interacting with.
I'd give the whole book maybe 3 out of 5 stars for the whole thing, but ignoring the first half, maybe 4 for the decent second half, and the interesting allusions, relating the Doctor to a handful more mythologies rather nicely.
I'm thinking about reading Dominion next, anyone have any suggestions one way or the other on that, or really any other EDA recs in general?
