Has anyone notice how every time River Song meets the doctor as the fifth and sixth seasons advance, that she shoots at him more and more.
That is, at first, she only drew a gun... but by the time of the fez, she shot it. But by the time of the stetson, she shot it off his head.
And in "The Day of the Moon", she's rapid firing her "gun" while spinning around shooting anything that moves. (and at the start of "The Imposible Astronaut", she empties a six shooter on the beach aiming just above the doctor)...no spoilers here!

It is a worrying progression, I agree, and bound to end in tears somewhere along the way... ;D

Talk about your worrying progression.... Look at the doctor himself....
First he says "Bowties are cool"... Then, "Fez are cool".... And, "Stetsons are cool".... And finally, while doning a space helmet, "This is so cool!"
WHAT NEXT???!!!

Well, it's a natural progression - if the bullets are getting closer, he needs the headgear to get more bulletproof... ;D

Ok, now I want to know if space helmets actually are bullet proof... Anyone?

They might be, you know - I don't know about the early 60s designs which were basically just modified high-altitude flight suits, but by the time of Apollo you're talking a seriously expensive, high-tech piece of kit. I imagine they'd have to be proof against orbital debris, micrometeorites etc. So, who knows, could be bulletproof? Don't know about the visor, though. Maybe if it hit you in the visor and you didn't have those little pull-down sun-shade things covering it...
There's a great Far Side cartoon along those lines, now that I think on it...

Ok, now I want to know if space helmets actually are bullet proof... Anyone? I would think the answer is no... if only because the designers were not expecting the lunar astronauts to pull a gun on each other... much less, for any of the astronauts to be packing on their lunar missions. However, they WOULD have designed the suits to be flexible, yet tough enough to not spring a leak in space...and perhaps, the thought of a micro meteorite imacting on a helment may have caused them to upgrade the strength level somewhat. That being said, I doubt if Amy's wild shot was dead on, and we see in the next episode that in fact, she was off-center... so the bullet's impact would have been a glancing blow, and not perpendicular to the surface. That would make a difference. If you're talking about River shooting at the austronaut on beach, well, the jury is still out on just exactly what was going on there... whether River knew she was shooting at herself...or if it was the kid... or if it's the doctor... or if she intentionally missed (remember, she just nailed the stetson from a distance) ...how could she have missed all six shots into a bulkly spacesuit at that distance? As I said, the jury is still out....

Humans have to be very careful in space. You have to keep vulnerability in mind all the time. I think they made everything as tough as they could, but a bullet trumps about everything I think. Bulletproof vests help, but there's still that big impact that knocks you down, and they're not perfect. I'm not sure we've invented completely bulletproof things.
