As a person named Kirk, I may have some unique insight into Star Trek. (**ahem**)
Given that the first movie should be skipped over, the next four movies are really not all that bad. II -The Wrath of Kahn, III- Search for Spock, IV- The Voyage Home (Whales), V- The Undiscovered Country
I believe once they got the formula right with II, III represents a trip into Hell to reclaim Spock's soul (fire, brimstone, betrayal, honor, loyalty, sacrifice), and therefore the decision to take IV into a lighter direction (a humorous episode, for a change) was a breath of fresh air. And the fact that Kirk DOESN'T get the girl makes it all the better. If the series had ended there, I'd have been happy. I didn't really care for Spock's brother in V, but upon reviewing, it's not all that bad...except that they ran out of money for the big special effects endind. (Done much better with CGI in, of all places, Galaxy Quest, complete with the rock monster!)
I can do without VI and the Klingon assassignation, and VII -Generations is not only a downer due to Renee being killed off off camera, but a needless injection of Kirk into a plot that didnt' require him. VIII - First Contact was good, though I was willing to bet my last dollar that it was going to be the black woman who piloted the ship, and NOT Zeffram Cockrum... making history an unfair twist that slighted her contribution... and I'll be that was in the original proposal that got cut out. But, that's ST for you. Somewhat uneven, but ever-changing. It's a shame the majority of the public can't tell the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars.
