ca.io9.com/#!5758458/original-audition-video-proves-doctor-whos-1996-comeback-could-have-been-way-worse ... So, there's Paul McGann is his actual-long-hair-not-a-wig glory reading pages from the original script of the TV movie. He's going on about the scrolls of Rassilon which is okay and a bit silly (as everything of Rassilon is) until it dawns on you that apparently Borusa is the Doctor's grandfather (wut?), and the Doctor's father is named Ulysses (wut?), a legendary lost explorer of Gallifrey who looked like a "raw-boned Kansas farmer" and got together with a human woman (okay, at least part of that stayed in the script), and had two sons (wait a second...) And yes, those sons are the Doctor and the Master. Oh, and they're all descended from Rassilon. And the Doctor is apparently a respected member of Gallifreyan society who has contributed much to his planet's uh... something... And this is just a clip?!?! I'm kind of tempted to get the DVD of the TV Movie now just to hear more of this... this... whatever this is. Though... I suppose that the biggest question of all (as ever) is: Is It Canon?

I'll say that again: You can see why they cast McGann, though - he's got "it", whatever it is, right there. I suppose, the half-human thing aside, the presentation of Gallifrey there is sort of drawing on a lot of the stuff established in the old series and the novels, but seriously rewriting the relationships between the characters, presumably to create more soapy "drama"... As the article says, as bad as many aspects of the TVM may be, it starts to look like a 24-carat classic in comparison to what might have been. Imagine if this stuff had gone to series!? It makes me want the revamped DVD of the TVM too, Clocket, if only to see spider-Daleks and more of this crackiness, but I think in the UK you can only buy it in a boxset with Talons of Weng-Chiang and Caves of Androzani, both of which I already own. I think they're supposed to be much-elaborated-upon versions too compared to the original releases, but... You know, it feels like a cheap ploy to make people buy three DVDs when they only really want one, and I'm loath to go along with that, even if I did want to spend the money. Hmm...a conundrum...

Yeah, the documentary about getting the TV movie made goes into a bit more detail about that, although not a great deal. Apparently there was a series bible written as a proposal that retold a lot of the old stories from Borusa's perspective as he traveled with the Doctor.
It seemed like at least a few of the people involved actually did care about the show - or at least they gave that impression - but all the industry speak was just depressing. For example, the BBC originally didn't want McCoy back because he wasn't such a popular Doctor. They suggested bringing Tom Baker back instead.

*tilts head*
I'm just.... um? (wut?)..... I mean...erm? This sounds like the Fanfic from the Pit (not to be confused with the Creature from the Pit, who was quite honourable and acceptable and not descended from Rassilon or in possession of an Evil sibling.)

Yeah, the ideas coming from the television "suits" seem simultaneously amusing and depressing. We can count ourselves lucky that in the case of NuWho people who legitimately love and respect the original series have maintained overall control - whatever quibbles oldschool fans might have, at least they didn't try a reboot like that (although RTD was a bit coy for a while about revealing that it was actually a continuation rather than a remake ;D). Poor old Sylv - just doesn't get the respect he deserves... You're right Prim - it does seem like the weirdest fanfic ever written in some respects. ;D *Thinks about writing fanfic about half-human Doctor travelling around space and time with his granddad Borusa, battling spider-Daleks and his brother the Master* *Recoils from above notion in horror and self-loathing* ;D

I mean, I ALWAYS thought McGann was attractive but *drops jaw* o.O holy hotness!!!!!!!!!!

I loved McGann as the doctor, and I've been sad ever since I saw that movie earlier this winter, that he doesn't get to be in any episodes... I've been reading some of the novels with him and they've been... of mixed quality. The first one I adored, the second one- I've done a bit of research and found out that it actually won and award for worst book of the year when it was published. I can't say that I'm surprised... But of course the novels don't have anything to do with McGann's awesomeness. However, I purchased the audio play Prisoner of the Sun last week, and it was pretty cool! I was surprised by how much of an audio-play it was, as opposed to being an audio book. You could really tell the difference, that it's written just as dialogue and sound effects, meant to be heard, not told.
I shall have to look into these strange extended versions... The whole half human thing almost could have worked with McGann, I think, but not in any way with the series. That does read like a bad summery of a season ender twist to a soap opera! DX

The Big Finish Audio Plays are really something to... listen to (I was going to say behold, but it doesn't really work in context does it?)
Eight has some truly magnificent stories in there. The arc with him and Charley is one of the maddest, magical, manic things you will ever listen to.
And Zagreus...
Everyone has to listen to Zagreus.
Though it doesn't actually make one whit of sense if you haven't heard Storm Warning and Neverwhere first.
