I'm starting to think the NAs might have begun this magic in DW thing. I recently listened to a few early NAs and it sounded as if they were saying Gallifrey employed actual magic before they turned to "reason" because of Rassilon ... If magic's real, it's only reasonable to use it, so why abandon it? But no magic in my DW please!
My dispute with the soothsaying crone in TEoT is not that Time Lords were falling back on superstition, but that in the story, the magic was real.
I had more to say, but my brain fell out.

Certainly in Cat's Cradle: Time's Crucible (which is where we get an awful lot of fanon about Gallifreyan prehistory) magic is used for prediction. But it isn't working properly any more (for no clearly-defined reason other than 'the author says so'), and so the rulers of Gallifrey set about developing time travel to replace it.

Beware the bad wolf The human girl who will fall in battle so very soon You are not alone Your song is ending There's something on your back The gate is waiting for you Rassilon's fortune teller person... Am I missing any? I feel like I'm missing some... Was this the first instances of "Bad Wolf" showing up in the series? "Bad Wolf" of NuWho Season one?

I completely missed that. Was this the one with all the multiple Citadels next to each other, and up in the sky, etc..? I had great difficulty following that one. If it really had magic in it, I suppose I'll stop trying to get the remaining books read onto tape. Then again, maybe it isn't "working any more" because it never did. I have intended for a long time to go through that book again, because everything seemed fascinating, even if I didn't understand it the first time around... but if it's all happening because of "magic", who cares? These bizarre circumstances are only interesting because they happen in a very restrictive world of physical laws. You ask yourself, how the hell did that happen, in the real world? Introduce magic, and nothing's interesting. It all happened because some magical wizard said so. Besides, I love science-fiction DW. If it becomes Harry Potter, that's where I disembark.

Well, if you ever get a chance to watch the re-con of Two's "The Invasion" you'll get a fun surprise.
